Women's Basketball Rolls in 87-65 Victory over Emory & Henry
SALEM - The Roanoke College women's basketball team cruised in a 87-65 victory over Emory & Henry on Wednesday evening. The Maroons now have a record of 9-10, 5-6 in ODAC play, while the Wasps are 4-16, 2-9 in the ODAC.

Paxton led the Maroons in scoring on the night, netting 18 points. She shot 5-11 from the field, and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. She also tallied seven rebounds in the effort. She has now moved into 7th all-time in scoring at Roanoke College with 1,233 points. She is now six points shy of moving into sixth place, passing Marcee Hufton '96 (1,238).

Three other Maroons scored in double digits on the evening. Tatum McKee and Laurel Hankins each scored 13 points. Hankins added three rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while McKee finished with six rebounds and a steal. Hannah Ward scored a career-high 10 points, shooting 4-6 from the field. She also tallied two rebounds and three assists. Bridget Holleran led the Maroons with a game high six assists.

The Maroons got off to a 4-0 start with baskets by McKee and Kelsey Smith. The Wasps answered with a pair of three-pointers, taking a 6-4 lead just three minutes into the contest. However, that two-point lead would be Emory & Henry's largest advantage of the game. Roanoke responded with a 6-0 run with four points from McKee and a jumper from Hannah Ward to go ahead 10-6 with 14:51 to play in the half. Gwin got in on the scoring action a few minutes later where she scored four the Maroons six points in a 6-0 run, bringing Roanoke ahead by nine 19-10.

With 6:36 to play in the half, Kanisha Wiley hit a jumper to put the Maroons ahead by 11, 26-15. Bridget Holleran drained a three pointer, followed by another two as Roanoke extended its lead to 16, 31-15. The Maroons went on another 8-0 run starting at 4:04 off of a Gwin layup. In the run, Kelsey Smith scored five points off of a trey and two free throws. With 2:43 in the half, Roanoke had built its lead to 20, 39-19. Emory & Henry outscored Roanoke 10-6 in the final two minutes of the half, as Roanoke led at intermission 45-29.

The Wasps' Kristie Langley knocked down a three pointer to open the second half, but was quickly answered with a three by Hankins. Gwin hit a layup just a minute later to put the Maroons back ahead by 18, 50-32. Over the next few minutes, Emory & Henry pulled back within 14, however Roanoke went on an 8-0 run, with baskets from Holleran, Smith, Hankins and McKee to put the Maroons ahead by 22, 60-38.

Emory & Henry started to inch back into the game, hitting threes that were answered by Roanoke free throws, cutting its defecit to 17 with 7:32 to play. Roanoke went back on the offensive, as the team went on a 7-0 run to build the lead back to 25 with 6:17 on the clock. Roanoke's advantage would hold over the next couple of minutes, even increasing to its peak of 26 after baskets from Holleran and Maggie Murray. The Wasps would score the last two baskets of the game but the Maroons lead was too large as Roanoke wins in ODAC play, 87-65.

The Maroons outshot the Wasps 42.3 to 37.5 percent from the field, while also leading in free throws 72.4 to 57.9 percent. Roanoke outrebounded Emory & Henry 53-38, as well as dishing out 16 assists to the Wasps eight.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, February 8th as they host Washington and Lee University. That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
