Women's Basketball Defeats Washington and Lee 72-55 on Saturday
ROANOKE - The Roanoke College women's basketball team won its second straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup, defeating Washington and Lee, 72-55 on Saturday. The Maroons now have a record of 10-10, 6-6 in the ODAC, while the Generals are now 5-15, 3-9 in ODAC play.

Paxton Gwin led the Maroons with 20 points on the afternoon, shooting 10-15 from the field. She also finished with seven rebounds and a steal. In her career at Roanoke College, she sits with 1253 points, which is good enough for sixth all-time, passing Marcee Hufton '96 who had 1,238 in her career.

Tatum McKee was Roanoke's only other player in double-figures, putting together a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. She also had two assists and two steals. Laurel Hankins finished with nine points, three rebounds and three assists, while Kelsey Smith put together eight points with two rebounds.

The Maroons got off to a 5-0 start on the back of Tatum McKee who made a layup in the opening minute, followed by an old-fashioned three point play. After the Generals' Annie Gauf hit a three pointer, Paxton Gwin hit a layup to keep the Maroons ahead by four, 7-3. W&L hit back to back shots to tie the game at 7-7, but Gwin hit another layup while Kelsey Smith knocked down a three-pointer to give the Maroons a five point cushion, 12-7 with 14:55 to play. By the 8:55 mark, Roanoke's lead sat at six points, after leading by as many as nine. A few moments later, Hankins hit a three pointer, then put in two free throws after another missed three attempt to bring the Roanoke lead back to nine, 25-16.

Roanoke's first double digit lead of the contest came at 4:03 in the first half, when Bridget Holleran hit a jumper to go ahead by 11, 29-18. Smith followed up with a basket a little later to increase the lead to 13. By the end of the first half, the Maroons led by 14, 38-24.

In the first three minutes of the second half, Roanoke extended its advantage to 17 after a 5-2 run, which included a trey from Smith. With 16:13 on the clock, Laurel Hankins hit a layup that started an 8-0 run for Roanoke, with three consecutive layups from Paxton Gwin. Ten minutes into the second half, Roanoke held a 55-34 advantage, but Washington and Lee spent the next minute on a 10-2 run, with three pointers from Annie Gauf and Cam Tyler.

At the 8:17 mark, Roanoke started a 8-0 run of its own, with baskets from McKee, Gwin and Holleran, giving the Maroons a 65-44 lead with 6:08 to play. In the final six minutes, the Generals outscored the Maroons 11-7, while Roanoke picked up the ODAC victory, 72-55 over Washington and Lee.

The Maroons outshot the Generals 41.7 to 28.4 percent from the field, while also holding an advantage at the free throw line 80 to 72.2 percent. Roanoke outrebounded Washington and Lee 49-42, as well as having more assists 13-4.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, February 12th as they play host to Hollins University in the Bast Center. That contest has a start time of 7:00 PM, and follows the men's basketball game at 5:00 PM.
