Women's Basketball Wins over Hollins in Tuesday Contest, 76-71
SALEM - The Roanoke College women's basketball team held off Hollins University in a tight Old Dominion Athletic Conference game, picking up the 76-71 victory. The Maroons now have a record of 11-10, 7-6 in the ODAC, while Hollins is now 6-16, 1-12 in ODAC play.

Kelsey Smith tallied a career high 20 points to lead the Maroons in scoring on Tuesday night. She shot 4-9 from behind the arc, and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Paxton Gwin followed with her fourth double-double of the season, netting 15 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 6-13 from the field on the night, and finished with one assist and one steal. Bridget Holleran was the third Maroon in double figures, scoring 11 points, with four rebounds, two assists.

The Maroons opened the first half on a perfect 4-4 mark, with Kelsey Smith hitting two three pointers, Bridget Holleran adding a trey of her own, and Paxton Gwin dropping in a layup. After the first two minutes, Roanoke held a 11-3 lead. Hollins charged over the next two minutes to go on a 11-2 run, including five points from Jewell Parfitt and a three pointer from Carrie Cox. Brandi Chesne knocked down a jumper at 15:25 to put Hollins ahead, 14-13. Roanoke quickly reclaimed the lead with a three pointer from Meghan Gadell, but an old fashioned three-point play from Parfitt gave Hollins a one point advantage with 12:52 to play.

Hollins took a 7-2 run through the 8:54 mark, leading by six, 24-18. Kelsey Smith hit a pair of free throws, while Gwin and Holleran hit layups to pull within three, 27-24. Chanci Wright scored the next five points for Hollins, putting the squad up by eight, 32-24 with 5:45 to play. Hollins extended its lead to nine with 2:13 on the clock, with a layup by Chesne to make the score 38-29. In the final minute, Gwin hit a layup followed by a pair of free throws by Tatum McKee to bring the Maroons back within five at halftime, 38-33.

Through the first four minutes of the second half, Hollins extended its lead back to eight, 43-35. After a pair of free throws from Gwin, Smith brought the Maroons back in the contest with back-to-back three pointers. With 15:07 to play, Roanoke trailed by four, 47-43. Hannah Ward came down the floor next and scored on a three point play, followed by a three from McKee give Roanoke a two-point, 49-47 advantage.

Hollins came back and scored five consecutive points to go up by three, 52-49. Through the 8:05 mark, Roanoke went on a 9-2 run, capped by a jumper by Holleran to take the two point 58-56 lead. Markia Beckwith added in a layup just a minute later to go ahead by four. However, Amber Markovitz of Hollins hit a three-pointer on the next trip down the floor to pull back within one, 60-59 with 6:59 to play. Roanoke built its lead to six, with points from Gwin and Gadell. Hollins' Parfitt hit a three pointer at 4:30 to cut the deficit to three points 65-62. With 3:20 to play, Hollins' Taylor Catron hit a pair of free throws after a Parfitt three-pointer as Hollins placed itself back within one point, 68-67.

Gwin hit a mid-range jumper, while the Maroons combined for four more points from free throws, as Roanoke took a five point, 74-69 lead with 48 seconds to play. After two missed free throws from Roanoke, Hollins' Auburn Smith hit a jumper to get the team back within three with 20 seconds to play. However, Smith hit two free throws down the stretch to seal the game for Roanoke, as the Maroons win 76-71.

Hollins was led in scoring by Jewell Parfit who netted 25 points on the night, including a 6-11 mark from behind the arc. She also finished with eight rebounds and three steals. Chanci Wright scored 14 points as well as 10 rebounds for a double-double on the night's effort. Taylor Catron also finished in double digits, netting 11 points, with four assists and four steals.

Hollins held a narrow edge in shooting, leading the Maroons 41.3 to 40 percent from the field. They also led in three point shooting, 40 to 29.2 percent. The Maroons outrebounded Hollins 42-39, while also having three fewer turnovers.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, February 15th as they travel to Harrisonburg to take on Eastern Mennonite University. That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
