Women's Basketball Wins ODAC Tournament Opening Round Game Over Washington and Lee
SALEM - The Roanoke College women's basketball team defeated Washington and Lee, 61-44, in the opening round of the 2014 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Monday evening. The Maroons advance in the tournament with a record of 13-12, while the Generals finish their season with a mark of 6-19.

With the win, the Maroons advance to the Quarterfinal round of the ODAC Tournament, facing off against #3 seed Lynchburg College at 8:00 PM. The ODAC Tournament will be held at the Salem Civic Center starting on Thursday, February 27th and will run through Sunday, March 3rd. The Maroon faced off against Lynchburg just one time this season, falling by just one point, 68-67. Paxton Gwin and Laurel Hankins led the Maroons in that game, scoring 19 and 13 points, respectively.

Gwin the Maroons in Monday night's contest as well, putting up 14 points, going along with four rebounds three blocks and one assist. Tatum McKee put up her second consecutive double-double, with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Laurel Hankins tallied eight points with three assists and two steals.

Roanoke jumped out of the gate on fire, going 3-3 in the first minute and a half, as McKee and Hankins each drained three pointers in their first attempts. McKee added a layup at 18:15 to give the Maroons an 8-0 lead early. Hankins sank another trey a few minutes later, while McKee and Hannah Ward each hit layups, putting the Maroons ahead 15-5, just five minutes into the game.

Kelsey Smith scored the next five points for Roanoke, as the Maroons had held the Generals to just seven points in the first 11 minutes of the contest. Gwin hit another three pointer for the Maroons as Roanoke was hot from behind the arc, as Roanoke took a 19-point, 31-12 lead with 6:18 to play in the half. The Generals would hold Roanoke scoreless through the remainder of the half, as Cam Tyler, Jackie Clifford and Samantha Sharman all scored in the final six minutes to cut the deficit to 11, 31-20.

Washington and Lee scored five points on the Maroons early as Wesleigh Vick and Paige Corvino hit a layup and three-pointer, respectively, as the Generals cut the deficit to 10, 35-25 with 18:33 to play. Just two minutes later, the Maroons went on the attack again, as Roanoke found a 9-0 run that included baskets by four different players. The run ran through the 12:54 mark, as Roanoke now led by 19, 46-27. The Maroons hit their largest lead of the game of 22 points as Smith and Gwin each knocked down a pair of free throws to make the score 53-31 with 8:31 on the clock.

The Generals held Roanoke to just seven points over the final minutes, while Cam Tyler hit a pair of three pointers to try and get Washington and Lee back into the contest. In the final eight minutes, the Generals scored 13 points, but the Maroons lead was too great, as the Maroons advanced to the next round of the tournament with a 61-44 victory.

The Maroons outshot the Generals 39.7 to 23.0 percent from the field, while also holding a 35.3 to 23.1 percent mark from behind the arc. Washington and Lee held the advantage a the free throw line, 90.9 to 81.8 percent. Roanoke narrowly led in rebounds 43-40, as well as assists 11-7. The teams tied in turnovers, giving the ball away 18 times each.

The Generals were led by Jackie Clifford, who scored 17 points with a perfect 7-7 mark from the free throw line. Cam Tyler also finished in double figures, netting 11 points, with a team high four steals.

The Maroons will tip-off at approximately 8:00 PM on Thursday night against the Lynchburg Hornets in the Salem Civic Center. For More information on the 2014 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament.
