Gwin Scores 1,000th Point in 80-71 Loss To Maryville
LEXINGTON, KY - Roanoke senior, Paxton Gwin, became the 16th player in Roanoke history to score 1,000 points, reaching the milestone in Roanoke's loss to Maryville College on Monday. The Maroons now have a record of 2-6, while the Scots sit with a mark of 6-2.

Paxton Gwin scored her 1,000th career point at the 5:16 mark in the second half, as she knocked down a three pointer. Gwin entered today's contest needing 18 points to cross the century mark, finishing the contest with 27. Gwin becomes the 16th player at Roanoke to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau, and now has 1,009 in her career, along with 310 rebounds.

The Scots jumped out to a 9-2 lead on the Maroons, as Laurel Hankins scored Roanoke's only two points in the first three minutes of the half. The Maroons went on a 9-4 run, as Paxton Gwin scored four points, while Kelsey Smith added a trey. At the 14:28 mark, Roanoke tied the game at 13-13 with a layup from Anna Carter. The Maroons took their first lead of the game at 13:34 as Tatum McKee knocked down a three pointer to go ahead by three.

The two teams exchanged the lead multiple times over the next six minutes as Roanoke took its final lead of the half at 6:39 with a pair of free throws, putting the Maroons ahead 25-24. The Scots outscored the Maroons 15-9 down the stretch of the first half, entering the locker room with a seven-point, 40-33 lead.

At the half, Laurel Hankins led the Maroons in scoring, netting 10 points, shooting 3-4 from the field. Paxton Gwin tallied four points with a team-high three rebounds. Tatum McKee led the squad with three assists. Maryville's Mackenzie Puckett led all players after the first 20 minute with 18 points, shooting 7-11.

The Maroons, down seven to start the second half, cut the lead to four in the first minute of the period. Maryville's lead fluctuated over the next six minutes, as Roanoke cut the deficit to four on two more occasions. With 11:42 on the clock, Bridget Holleran hit a jumper to pull the Maroons within three, the Scots smallest lead of the half. However, over the course of the next three minutes, Maryville extended its lead to as many as 11. With 5:16 to play in the contest, Gwin knocked down a three-pointer, hitting her 1,000th point exactly. In the final five minutes, the Scots posted their largest lead of the game, 74-62, and held on to a nine point lead as the buzzer sounded. Roanoke fell in non-conference play to Maryville, 80-71.

Gwin finished the contest with 27 points, leading all players in the game. She was followed by Laurel Hankins with 13 and Kelsey Smith with 11. Gwin also led the team with eight rebounds, while Tatum McKee finished with six. Markia Beckwith finished the game with a team-high five steals.

Roanoke outshot Maryville 49.0 to 47.5 percent from the field, while the Scots outrebounded the Maroons 36-23. Roanoke also led in the steals column 10-5 over Maryville.

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they take on Transylvania University in the final game of the Pat Deacon Classic. That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
