Women's Basketball Falls to Pioneers 76-64 in Pat Deacon Classic
LEXINGTON, KY - The Roanoke College women's basketball team fell in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon against Transylvania University in the second day of the Pat Deacon Classic, 76-64. The Maroons now have a record of 2-7, while the Pioneers are currently 7-1.

Three Maroons finished with 11 points to lead the team. Laurel Hankins finished with 11 points and a team high seven rebounds. Paxton Gwin also netted 11, while finishing with five rebounds. Anna Carter had three steals and two assists to go along with five rebounds and 11 points. Also in double-digits was Tatum Mckee who scored 10 points with four steals and three assists.

The Pioneers led through the entire contest, starting the game on a 14-3 run, through the first four minutes of the game. Transylvania's lead went up to as many as 14 in different points in the contest. With 7:35 to play in the first half, Transy held a 34-20 advantage. The Maroons started to turn the game around at this point, as Paxton Gwin, who scored her 1,000th point yesterday, netted 10 consecutive points, helping pull the Maroons within four, 34-30 with 4:00 to play. Laurel Hankins added a pair of free throws to pull within two, but Transy strengthened its lead to six by the end of the first half. The teams closed the period as Roanoke trailed 42-36.

With 17:04 in the second half, Laurel Hankins got fouled taking a three pointer, then followed through on all three free throws to pull within three, 45-52. Anna Carter knocked down a jumper to pull the Maroons within one, 45-44. Over the next few minutes, the Pioneers jumped back ahead by seven after a free throw from Alex Botkin. The Maroons would only get as close as five in the remainder of the second half, as Laurel Hankins and Tatum McKee kept hitting free throws to keep Roanoke in the contest. With 3:09 to play, McKee knocked down a pair of free throws to keep the deficit at five, 65-60. Kanisha Wiley hit a jumper in the paint with two minutes to play, making the score at 67-62. However, the Pioneers hit shots down the stretch, extending their advantage to 12 points by the end of the game as Roanoke fell 76-64.

The Pioneers outshot the Maroons 43.5 to 32.8 percent from the field, as well as holding a 67.9 to 61.1 advantage from the free throw line. The Maroons finished with nine steals to the Pioneers' four.

The Maroons return to action on Thursday, January 2nd as they take on Hollins University on the road. That contest is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start.
