Roanoke Wins In ODAC Play, Tops Guilford 61-57 On The Road
GREENSBORO, NC - The Roanoke College women's basketball team picked up its first win of 2015 after defeating Guilford College 61-57 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The Maroons now have a record of 5-8, 2-3 in the ODAC, while the Quakers are 8-6, 2-3 in ODAC play.

Playing with a broken finger, Cary Beahm led the Maroons in the victory with a career-high 22 points, shooting 8-14 from the field. Beahm currently ranks fifth in the ODAC in scoring average, netting 15.8 points per game. She has scored 20 points or more on four different occasions this season, and has been in double-figures for the last five consecutive games. Beahm also finished the contest with five rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist.

Markia Beckwith was in double-figures for the second game in a row, scoring 13 tonight against Guilford. Beckwith notched three steals and a career-high six assists. Beckwith was 4-5 from the floor, including a perfect 2-2 mark from the three point line. She tied for the team high in rebounds with seven. Also with seven rebounds was Anna Carter, who has combined for 17 rebounds in the past two games, including a career-high 10 against Randolph-Macon. Carter led the team with another career-high, this time in steals, swiping four tonight. Meghan Gadell was the third Maroon in double-figures tonight, scoring 10 points. Six of Gadell's 10 points came from behind the arc, where she shot 2-4.

"Tonight, we got back to playing together as a team," said head coach Carla Flaherty. "When we execute and trust in our offenses, rather than forcing a one-on-five, we are much more effective and I believe we can compete with anyone. Today's outcome was a total team effort."

As a team, Roanoke shot 42.0 percent from the field, hitting 21 of 50 shots, which is the team's second highest shooting percentage this season. The Maroons were 5-9 from the three point line, a mark of 55.6 percent, Roanoke's best in 2014-15.

Beckwith scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half, while Beahm had put together 10 points. The two Maroons led all players in the contest at the half. Roanoke trailed early to the Quakers, going down by as many as eight points in the first five minutes, and Guilford's largest lead of nine points (22-13) with 10:44 to play in the half. Roanoke started to chip away at the Quaker lead, as Anna Carter and Ellen Wagner each took advantage of free throw opportunities. Carter also added a jumper at 8:04 to cut the deficit to five. A Gadell three pointer at 6:06 spurred a 19-4 run for the Maroons that closed the first half. During that run, Beckwith tallied nine points, including two back-to-back three pointers. Roanoke captured an eight-point 40-32 lead entering half.

The Quakers closed the gap quickly, starting on an 8-3 run to start the second half. By 8:47, Guilford tied the game at 49-49 as Heaven Walters knocked down a trey. Beahm scored the next four points for the Maroons creating separation between the two teams. The Quakers got back within one at 6:03, but Beahm scored four more for the Maroons to go back ahead by five. Walters fired back with another three-pointer, while Brittany Drew hit a jumper to tie the game at 57-57 with 1:45 to play. Nearly a minute passed before either team scored again, and it was Gadell who found the basket with a layup, an assist provided by Anna Carter. Guilford took one last attempt with 18 seconds to play, but missed a jumper and Roanoke grabbed the rebounds. Beckwith hit a pair of free throws just a few seconds later to seal the Roanoke victory, 61-57 in the ODAC matchup.

Guilford's Brittany Drew finished with 14 points, shooting 6-14 from the field. She had three assists in the contest as well. Anais Weatherly and Heaven Walters each tallying 12 points, while Jenette Taylor led all players with seven assists. Weatherly put up a double-double as well, finishing with 10 boards on the night.

The Maroons are back in action on Saturday, January 17th as they travel to the eastern shore to take on Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC competition. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
