Women Battle Marlins To Overtime, Fall 73-71 In ODAC Contest
VIRGINIA BEACH - The Roanoke College women's basketball team battled Virginia Wesleyan to overtime on Saturday, but fell in extra time in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest, 73-71. The Maroons are now 4-9, 1-4 in the ODAC while the Marlins are 10-5, 4-2 in ODAC play.

Sophomore Cary Beahm scored a career high 23 points on Saturday, shooting 7-9 from the field and hitting a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line. She narrowly missed a double-double by pulling down eight boards, four offensive and four defensive. Beahm has crossed the 200 point total through 13 games so far this season, and currently is ranked fifth in the ODAC in points per game (15.8).

Bridget Holleran also tallied a career high in points, netting 14 points in the overtime loss on Saturday. Holleran hit five of 11 shots, and didn't miss either of her two shots from both the free throw lines and behind the arc. Meghan Gadell and Anna Carter tied in double-figures with 12 points apiece. Gadell shot 5-10, while Carter was 4-9 from the field. Carter tallied six rebounds, while Gadell had two steals and one assist.

Virginia Wesleyan led Roanoke after the first 20 minutes, boasting a seven point, 35-28 advantage. Roanoke started to close the gap early in the second half, as McKee and Beahm each put away jumpers, cutting the deficit to four, 37-33 in the first 1:30 of the half. Beahm scored four more points in the fifth minute of the half, allowing Roanoke to get within two, 41-39. The Marlins were able to keep Roanoke at bay for most of the second half, never allowing the Maroons to take the lead.

Virginia Wesleyan's Symonne Newsome hit a jumper with 3:18 to play to build the Marlins' lead back to eight points, 59-51. Roanoke took the next three minutes to charge to the finish. Holleran knocked down a pair of free throws, cutting the Marlin lead to six. Cary Beahm remained unblemished at the free throw line, hitting two more and getting within four. Wesleyan's Glasco hit a jumper to create separation, but Tatum McKee answered with a trey to get within three. Beahm connected with a jumper with :17 to play, as Roanoke immediately took a time out. Roanoke took a quick foul, where Andrea Paphites made one of two for the Marlins, going up by two points. But it was Anna Carter, who has been playing strong for the Maroons in the new year, that hit a two at the buzzer to send the game to overtime and keep the Maroons alive, 62-62.

Virginia Wesleyan's Newsome opened the OT period with a three-pointer to make the first move in extra time. Beahm answered 30 seconds later with a jumper, as the Maroons trailed by one. AT 3:25, Paphites hit another three for the Marlins, taking a six point advantage. A minute later, Beahm hit two free throws, followed by a jumper to tie the game at 68-68 with 2:00 to play. Paphites hit a jump shot to bring the game in favor of the Marlins, while Kerri Taylor hit a three for VWC for a five point lead. With 40 seconds left. Gadell hit a trey bringing Roanoke within two, but that would be the final basket for either team in the game, as Virginia Wesleyan picked up the 73-71 win.

The Marlins had two players in double figures. They were led by Brittany Glasco, who scored 21 points off of 9-14 shooting. She was a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc, with five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Crystal Strother finished with 12 points, hitting 6-9 from the field. Symonne Newsome led the team with seven assists, while Nancy Kelly had a team-high six rebounds.

Roanoke shot over 43.1 percent from the field, as well as 88.2 from the free throw line. The Maroons led in rebounds 37-35, while the Marlins led in assists 24-12.

The women's basketball team is back in action on Wednesday, January 21st as they play host to Hollins in Bast Gymnasium. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
