Roanoke Bests Hollins in the Bast Center, 62-50 on Wednesday
SALEM - The Roanoke College women's basketball team picked up a home Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory on Wednesday after defeating Hollins University 62-50. The Maroons now have a record of 6-9, 3-4 in the ODAC, while Hollins is now 2-13, 0-7 in ODAC play.

Sophomore Cary Beahm tied a career high, netting 23 points in the win over Hollins. She shot 10-16 from the field, while pulling down a team-high tying seven rebounds. In the past week, Beahm has moved up in the ODAC rankings in points per game, now sitting third in the conference with 16.8 points per game. She just trails Jess Rheinheimer (EMU - 19.7 PPG) and Hannah Livermon (R-MC - 17.7 PPG).

Hollins got on the board first with a pair of baskets by Aburn Smith, giving Hollins an early 4-3 lead. Roanoke took the lead with a layup from Beahm at 16:48. Roanoke held its lead over the next eight minutes, seeing baskets from Tatum McKee, Markia Beckwith, Anna Carter, Meghan Gadell and Beahm. With 8:22 to play, Roanoke held a 15-10 advantage. Hollins' Kaitlyn Taylor and Giselle Verville combined for five points, tying the game at 15-15. Gadell hit a layup to reclaim the lead, but Britney Campbell tacked on a layup of her own to tie the game at 17-17. Roanoke spend the final four minutes of the contest with a 9-2 run, giving the Maroons a 26-19 lead entering the half.

Beahm started the second half with a jumper, but Hollins hit back to back three-pointers to cut the Roanoke lead to three points, 28-25. McKee squared away a three of her own, boosting the advantage back to six points. Roanoke went up by as many as nine points through the 8:36 mark, as Bridget Holleran hit a layup at that moment to take a 43-35 lead. Roanoke spend the remainder of the contest with a lead no-less than nine points and hit its peak of 14 points, with 35 seconds remaining in the half. Hollins attempted to foul down the stretch, but the Maroons, who were hitting 66.7 percent of free throws in the contest, kept Hollins from gaining on Roanoke's lead. Roanoke defeated Hollins 62-50 in ODAC play.

Markia Beckwith was the only other Maroon in double-figures, finishing with11 points. She also tallied five rebounds and two assists. Tying Beahm in rebounds was Meghan Gadell, Anna Carter and Ellen Wagner, who all finished with seven boards. Tatum McKee and Carter led the team in assists with three each, while Beahm topped the squad in steals with two.

Hollins had three players finish with 10 points each on the night. Britney Campbell tallied a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points. Auburn Smith went 4-9 from the field for 10 points, tallying four rebounds in the process. Taylor Catron finished with 10 points, including six from behind the arc. She also had the second most rebounds on the team with eight.

Roanoke outshot Hollins 40.3 to 30.6 percent from the field, and trailed with a nearly identical 22.2 to 22.7 percent from behind the arc. Roanoke also led the rebounds battle, pulling down 46 boards to Hollins' 41.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, January 24th as they take on Eastern Mennonite University. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start and is part of Roanoke's Maroon Madness event. Students will be able to participate in contests, raffles, win prizes and receive free food and drink. The event also will include the men's basketball game against Bridgewater at 3:30 PM.
