Women Drop ODAC Contest at Home on Saturday to Eastern Mennonite
SALEM -The Roanoke College women's basketball team dropped a home Old Dominion Athletic Conference at home on Saturday to Eastern Mennonite 65-46. The Maroons now have a record of 6-10, 3-5 in ODAC Play, while the Royals, who received votes in the latest d3hoops.com poll, sits with a mark of 13-3, 7-1 in the ODAC.

Cary Beahm had her fourth consecutive game scoring 20 points or more, finishing Saturday's contest with 20 points off of 7-12 shooting. She also led the team with seven rebounds, while also tallying one assist and one steal. Beahm ranks third in the ODAC in points per game (17.0) and total points (272). She also leads the league in free throws made, knocking down 69 of her 87 attempts.

Tatum McKee was second on the squad in scoring with six points, finishing with five rebounds and two steals. Anna Carter came in second for the day in rebounds with six, going along with her four points.

The contest was a part of Maroon Madness, an event put on by Roanoke's SGA. The event saw the stands packed with students in support of the women's and men's basketball teams over the double-header Saturday afternoon. Free t-shirts were given away, as well as prizes for in-game contests, raffles and door prizes.

Roanoke was hot out of the gate, with McKee hitting a three to start the scoring for the Maroons. Meaghan Gadell followed with a jumper to get Roanoke out to a 5-0 lead in the first 2:30 of the game. Roanoke got out to a 7-3 start, but a pair of Jess Rheinheimer three pointers and a layup from Alisa Brown gave the Royals a 8-7 lead at 14:45. The contest saw two ties at 8-8 and 10-10, but EMU went on a 12-3 run through the 7:09 mark to take an 18-13 lead. Beahm put away a pair of baskets to get the Maroons within three with 4:56 to play in the half, but the Royals closed the half on a 10-4 run to have a 30-21 advantage after the first 20 minutes.

The teams traded shot after shot for the first three minutes of the game, with Beahm, Carter and Beckwith all making baskets, but the Maroons still trailed by 10, 39-29. Ellen Wagner hit a basket, followed by four Beahm points, as the Maroons cut the deficit to seven, 42-35 with 14 minutes to play. A few minutes later, still trailing by seven, the Royals went on a 9-0 run, spurred by a zumFelde three pointer to take a 16-point lead with nine minutes on the clock. Gadell hit a three, but zumFelde answered with another trey. Beahm went on to score the final points for the Maroons at 4:23 on a pair of free throws, but Eastern Mennonite's lead was too large to overcome in the closing minutes.

The Royals were led by Marla zumFelde, who tallied 18 points off 6-11 shooting, all of which was from behind the arc. Jess Rheinheimer shot 7-13 for 16 points and capped off a double-double with 11 rebounds. Alisa Brown led the team with four assists and three steals.

Eastern Mennonite held the advantage from the field, shooting 38.8 percent to Roanoke's 31.6 percent from the field. The Royals also finished with 31.2 percent shooting from behind the arc, while the Maroons led at the free throw line 87.5 to 75.0 percent. EMU held the advantage in rebounds 48-33, as well as assists 15-10.

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, January 27th as they travel to take on the Generals of Washington & Lee in ODAC action. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
