Women Fall in Overtime to Washington & Lee on Tuesday
LEXINGTON - The Roanoke College women's basketball team took Washington & Lee to overtime on Tuesday evening, but fell in the extra period 76-69. The Maroons now have a record of 6-11, 3-6 in the ODAC, while the Generals are 14-3, 7-2 in ODAC play.

For the third time in five games, Cary Beahm scored a career high, netting 24 points off of 10-17 shooting. She also finished with a career-high in assists with four, and pulled down six rebounds. Beahm currently ranks third in the ODAC in points per game (17.4) and sits just one-tenth of a point per game behind the second place player, Hannah Livermon of Randolph-Macon. Through 17 games this season, Beahm has scored 296 points, which also ranks third in the conference.

Anna Carter put together 11 points, shooting 5-7 from the floor and tied for a team high in rebounds with eight. Carter has tallied five or more rebounds per game over the past six games, with a high of 10 against Randolph-Macon. Tonight's total is her second-highest mark this season. Ellen Wagner came off the bench to put up a season high 10 points. She also added two rebounds and one assist. Tatum McKee also tied for the high in rebounds with eight, and was second on the squad in assists with three.

Roanoke was on fire out of the gate on Tuesday, starting the contest on a 9-0 run against the team who is currently third in the ODAC. Kanisha Wiley led the Maroons in the run with four points. The Generals started to close the gap by hitting three-pointers for their first three made baskets of the contest. With 15:14 to play in the first half, Roanoke now had a four points, 13-9 lead. In fact, Washington & Lee's first seven baskets of the game all came from behind the arc. But Cary Beahm, Allison Yeaw and Ellen Wagner all continued to score for the Maroons, keeping Roanoke ahead by as few as four but as many as nine points through the 5:17 mark in the first half. In the final five minutes of the first half, Roanoke outscored Washington & Lee 12-4, closing the first period with a 12-point 39-27 advantage.

Anna Carter made the first four points in the second half for Roanoke, as the Maroons held the Generals scoreless through the first five minutes of play. At 15:28 in the second, Roanoke led by 16 points, its largest lead of the game. Through the next five minutes of play, Roanoke's lead held strong at 14 points after Beahm hit a jumper at 10:06. Roanoke still led by 12 points with 6:04 after McKee hit a layup to put the Maroons ahead 55-43. Shelbi Hendricks, Samantha Sharman and Jackie Clifford started hitting shots for the Generals, cutting the W&L deficit to seven points, 57-50 with 3:37 to play. Two minutes later, Clifford hit a free throw, while Hendricks knocked down a trey to get within two points 57-55. Beahm hit the front end of a one-and-one with 14 seconds left to go back up by three, but Clifford hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

As in the two previous periods, Roanoke was the first to score with a pair of free throws from McKee. W&L's Emily Perszyk followed that with a three pointer. Anna Carter reclaimed the lead for the Maroons with a layup at 3:16 to put Roanoke up 62-61. Hendricks and Perszyk answered Roanoke's baskets with three pointers, giving the Generals a five point, 69-64 lead with 1:19 to play. The teams traded free throws through the 19-second mark, but Washington & Lee's ability to convert on late game free throws kept the game in their favor, as Roanoke fell 76-69 on Tuesday.

The Generals were led by Emily Perszyk who shot 6-19 from the field for 18 points, all made baskets came from behind the arc. Clifford finished with 16 points, and Hendricks and Corvino tallied identical double-doubles of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Roanoke led the contest in shooting, hitting 51.9 percent of their shots to Washington & Lee's 28.7 percent. 13 of the General's 23 made baskets came from behind the arc, while the Maroons did not attempt a single three-point shot on the night. The Generals led in rebounds 49-38, as well as assists 18-12. Roanoke scored 40 of its 69 points in the paint, with 24 points coming off of the bench.

Roanoke returns to action on Thursday, January 29th as the Maroons take on Salem College in the Bast Center. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
