Beahm Scores 33 in Roanoke's Double Overtime Win over Salem
SALEM - The Roanoke College men's and women's basketball teams have played in a combined five overtime periods over the last three days. The Maroons' women's team found themselves on the winning end of a double-overtime affair with Salem College on Thursday evening, winning 82-77 in the Bast Center. After the non-conference win, Roanoke has an overall record of 7-11, while the Spirits are 3-11 on the season.

Cary Beahm was one point shy of tying the all-time single game scoring record, putting up 33 points in the win. Her single game effort on Thursday ranks third all-time at Roanoke, behind a pair of 34 point games by Erin Hanson (1-16-07 vs Emory & Henry) and Crystal Wilson (2-15-94 vs. Emory & Henry). Roanoke's last 30 point game came from Paxton Gwin on February 16th against Bridgewater College, where she put up 31 points. Beahm also put together a double-double, pulling down 11 rebounds. At the conclusion on Thursday's game, she is the leading scorer in the ODAC with 329 total points, while ranking second in points per game with 18.3.

Bridget Holleran also had a career night, putting up 19 points with eight rebounds, both career bests for the sophomore. Holleran shot 8-15 from the field, while dishing out four assists with two steals. Also putting together a career double-double for the Maroons was Anna Carter with 16 points and 15 rebounds. With Carter's rebounding total for the night, she raised her rebounding average a full point from 5.1 RPG to 6.1 RPG. Her 15 rebounds are the most rebounds in a game for Roanoke since Tatum McKee had 16 boards against Randolph-Macon on February 17th, 2012.

Roanoke trailed by four in the opening moments of the first half, but quickly turned the game around in the Maroons favor. Beahm and Holleran combined for an 8-3 run to give Roanoke a 12-9 lead with 12:44 to play in the first half. Roanoke still led by three points at the 6:50 mark in the first half, until Holleran drained a three pointer to raise the advantage to six points. Beahm made the Maroons next eight points in the half, taking a 29-21 lead with 2:59 to play. A pair of free throws by Carter and a layup by Beahm closed the scoring for the first half for the Maroons, leading 33-21 with 1:35 on the clock. However, the Spirits went on a 7-0 run to in the final minute of play, leaving Roanoke with a five-point, 33-28 lead at half.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, 12 of Roanoke's 18 points came from free throws, as the Maroons led by nine, 51-42 with 9:26 to play. Salem's Quantashea Lewis went on a 5-0 run of her own over the next minute to cut the Spirts' deficit to four points, 51-47. Roanoke's lead stayed at three to five points up to the final two minutes of the half, until Salem's Kristal Lollis hit a three pointer to get within two, 63-61. Carter hit one of two free throws with 1:21 to play to widen the advantage to three points. But it was Lollis who knocked down another trey with 27 seconds left to knot the game at 64-64, sending Roanoke to overtime for the second consecutive game.

Scoring was scarce in the first overtime period as both teams only made two baskets each. Carter scored in the first minute, while Salem's Lewis answered just 40 seconds later. At 2:24, Holleran dropped in a layup to go ahead again by two points, but Lollis hit a jumper with 30 seconds to play to tie the game at 68 all. Beahm took the final shot for the Maroons in the first OT, missed but Beckwith got the offensive rebound. The ball got loose, Roanoke fouled, and Lollis missed the game winning free throw for Salem, sending the game to the second overtime of the night, the fourth in Bast in two days.

Lewis hit a three pointer out of the gate for Salem, to take an early three-point lead. Beahm answered on the next trip down the floor with a jumper. Lollis extended the lead back to three with a layup. Tatum Mckee hit a jumper, followed by a basket by Beahm, both assisted by Beckwith, to take Roanoke's first lead of the period. Lewis hit two more free throws to reclaim the lead for Salem. A jumper by Carter and two Holleran free throws gave Roanoke a three point, 78-75 advantage with 2:45 to play. The Spirits' Henderson hit a layup with 1:21 to play, but Beahm clenched the game going 4-4 from the free throw line in the final minute of the contest to give Roanoke the 82-77 double overtime win.

The Spirits were led by Lewis who scored 30 points with 12 rebounds, shooting 13-25 from the floor. Lollis tallied a second double-double for Salem, with 22 points and 14 rebounds. She shot 3-7 from behind the arc, scoring 60 percent of Salem's three pointers.

The Maroons outshot Salem, 42.9 to 38.4 percent from the field, and 56.8 to 50.0 percent from the free throw line. Roanoke held the rebound advantage, 58-47, as well as the assist advantage 19-9. McKee led the Maroons with five assists on the evening.

Roanoke returns to action on Saturday, January 31st as they travel to take on the Shenandoah Hornets in ODAC play. That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
