Maroons Stung By Hornets, 57-51 on Saturday
WINCHESTER - The Roanoke College women's basketball team dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest to Shenandoah on Saturday, 57-51. The Maroons now have a record of 7-12, 3-7 in the ODAC, while the Hornets have an identical 7-12, 3-7 record for the season.

Cary Beahm led the Maroons in scoring for the 11th consecutive game and 17th game overall this season. She finished with 18 points, shooting 8-10 from the field. She also tallied seven rebounds and one steal on the evening. Also in double-figures was Meghan Gadell with 12 points. Gadell led the Maroons in rebounding, pulling down nine boards, just narrowly missing a double-double by one rebounds. Allison Yeaw was the only other Maroons with more than four points, netting eight. Tatum Mckee finished with six rebounds and three steals, while Kanisha Wiley topped the team with five assists.

Roanoke jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after a three by Gadell and a jumper by Beahm in the first two minutes of play. Shenandoah's Ashley McGhee quickly scored a three of her own to get the Maroons back within two points, 5-3. Gadell scored the Maroons next three points, but was answered for each shot by the Hornets, as Kirstyn Arcata tied the game at 7-7 for Shenandoah with 12:55 to play. Over the next four minutes, Roanoke scored four points off of Yeaw and Gadell, taking a 13-7 advantage. Roanoke's lead held through the 2:12 mark, but Shenandoah tied the game at 1:24 with a jumper by Erin French, locking the game at 21-21. Gadell hit a free throw in the final minute, but Haley Urben scored a layup with 29 seconds left to give the Hornets a 23-22 lead entering the locker rooms.

The Hornets outscored the Maroons 9-2 in the opening three minutes of play to take a quick 32-24 advantage. Allison Yeaw hit a jumper while Beahm knocked down a trey to get the Maroons back within three, 32-29 with 15:40 left in the half. Beahm and Carter combined for the next six consecutive points to reclaim the lead for Roanoke, 35-34 just two minutes later. Roanoke's lead extended to four points at 8:21 after a Beahm layup. Holly Chittenden scored four consecutive points just a few minutes later to take a 45-44 Hornet lead. Bridget Holleran tallied the next basket for the Maroons to capture the lead once again. Starting at the 4:12 mark, Shenandoah went on a 6-0 run to lead 51-46. Shenandoah's advantage stayed at five through the 1:10 mark until Gadell hit a three pointer eight seconds later to cut the deficit to two. However, Erin French and Breya Wallace scored four points in the final 30 seconds to secure the win for the Hornets, 57-51.

The Hornets played just eight players in the contest, led by Holly Chittenden with 11 points. She tallied eight rebounds and shot 4-6 from the field. Erin French put together a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also tallied four steals and three assists in her effort. Kristyn Arcata led the Hornets with six assists and five steals while tallying five points on the afternoon.

Roanoke narrowly held the shooting advantage, netting 40.4 to the Hornets' 40.0 percent. The Maroons also led behind the arc 37.5 to 25.0 percent, while the Hornets led 73.3 to 55.6 percent from the free throw line. Shenandoah led in both rebounds (35-33) and assists (16-7).

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, February 4th as they take on Emory & Henry on the Road. That contest is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start.
