Late Wasp Run Halts Maroons, 72-60 in ODAC Play
EMORY - The Roanoke College women's basketball team fell in ODAC action to Emory & Henry on Wednesday evening, 72-60. The Maroons now have a record of 7-13, 3-8 in the ODAC, while the Wasps are 10-10, 5-6 in ODAC play.

For the 11th straight contest, Cary Beahm led the Maroons in scoring, tallying 21 points in tonight's effort. It is also her 10th game this season with 20 points or more. Cary Beahm now leads the ODAC in points scored with 368, while ranking second in the conference in points per game, notching 18.4 per contest. She currently is ranked third in the ODAC in field goal percentage, hitting 54.5 percent of her shots from the field. Also, Beahm leads the ODAC in free throws made with 90, while she's eighth in offensive rebounds with 55.

Also scoring in double-figures for the Maroons was Ellen Wagner, who shot 5-7 from the field for 10 points. Kanisha Wiley led the Maroons with 10 rebounds, seven of which were offensive. Markia Beckwith dished out a team high three assists, as well as a Maroon best five steals.

Meghan Gadell scored the opening four points for the Maroons to get Roanoke out to a 4-3 lead in the first two minutes of the contest. The teams traded the lead back and forth over the first 10 minutes, seeing 11 lead changes over that time. Bridget Holleran hit a layup at 9:54 to give Roanoke a three point advantage over the wasps, 17-14, which would turn out to be Roanoke's largest lead of the game. Emory & Henry's Karina Farr made the next seven points for the Wasps, giving E&H a two point, 21-19 lead with 7:07 to play. Roanoke Bounced back at the 5:39 mark, as the Maroons went on a 6-0 run, capped by a Wagner layup to put Roanoke ahead by three again, 25-22. E&H's Chloe Harris quickly knocked down a three to tie the game again at 25-25. Roanoke continued to stay resilient, as they would answer down the first half stretch for each of the Wasps baskets Markia Beckwith scored the final four points for the Maroons, but Emory & Henry led by three, 32-29 at halftime.

Anna Carter, Meghan Gadell and Cary Beahm combined for the first six points of the second half, reclaiming a three point, 35-32 lead. The next basket for the Wasps was a three by Anna Green, tying the game quickly at 35 all. Beahm answered with a layup to take the lead again for the Maroons, but Farr and Brewster of E&H each answered with baskets of their own. Ellen Wagner went off for another four points, taking the lead in favor of Roanoke, 41-39 with 14:04 to play. The Wasps' Brewster went off for six unanswered points, but Beahm came back with four of her own, keeping the contest knotted up at 45-45. Roanoke continued to keep the game tied for every point the Wasps scored, until the 7:00 minute mark. The Wasps went on a 13-2 run that ran through the 3:51 mark, taking an 11-point, 66-55 lead. The lead proved to be too much in the final minutes, as Roanoke combined for five points in the last four minutes, falling to Emory & Henry 72-60

Three of Emory & Henry's starters all finished with 10 points or more for the evening. Chloe Harris put up 16 points on 6-8 shooting, 4-6 from behind the arc. Tamara Brewster put together a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Karina Farr also finished with 14 points, notching eight boards with two steals. Meagan Jacoby led all players in the contest with nine assists, finishing with seven points.

Emory & Henry outshot the Maroons 43.9 to 38.8 percent from the field, while the Maroons held the advantage from the free throw line, 74.1 to 63.6 percent. Roanoke also outrebounded the Wasps 43-41, while Emory & Henry led in assists 19-9. The contest saw 17 lead changes and 14 ties.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, February 7th as they play host to Bridgewater College in the Bast Center. That contest, which is part of Roanoke College Basketball Alumni Day, is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
