Maroons Drop ODAC Contest To Bridgewater 61-51 on Saturday
SALEM - The Roanoke College women's basketball team led by one entering halftime, but Bridgewater benefited from a late second half run, as the Maroons fell 61-51 in ODAC action. The Maroons now have a record of 7-14, 3-9 in the ODAC, while the Eagles are now 11-9, 6-6 in ODAC play.

Despite just hitting two shots from the field, Cary Beahm put together a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. This is Beahm's second double-double of the year, and her second in the past four games. Her 12 rebounds ties her career high, which she achieved against Christopher Newport in the second game of the season on November 11th.

Also with 10 points for the Maroons was Ellen Wagner, who tied a career high for points. This is the second consecutive game for Wagner with 10 points, and her third this season. Wagner shot 5-8 from the field and pulled down five rebounds. Kanisha Wiley finished the game with six rebounds and six assists. Markia Beckwith led the team with three steals, two assists and eight points.

The game went scoreless for the first two minutes of the contest until Oshene Kelly of Bridgewater hit a layup to take the early 2-0 lead. Meghan Gadell answered with a three-pointer just a few seconds later to give the Maroons the 3-2 advantage. The Eagles spent the next six minutes on a 13-0 run, with Jessica Lam scoring six points to take a 15-3 advantage with 13:36 to play. Roanoke started to chip away at the deficit when Wagner, Beckwith and Bridget Holleran all chipping in. Beckwith hit a trey just past the 10-mintue mark to get the Maroons back within five points, 17-12. Carter dropped in a layup at 6:41 to cut the Eagle lead to one, 19-18. The Maroons and Eagles traded shots back and forth until Kanisha Wiley hit a jumper at 1:45 to take a 26-25 lead. Bridgewater reclaimed the lead with 29 seconds left, but Beahm hit a jumper at the buzzer to lead the Maroons to the locker room with a 28-27 advantage.

Roanoke built its lead to three points after a pair of free throws from Carter in the opening seconds of the second half. After those free throws, though, the Eagles held Roanoke scoreless through the 13:42 mark, until McKee hit a jumper to get the Maroons within three points, 35-32. Wagner hit a jumper a minute later to cut the deficit to one. At 7:37, Bridgewater's Jessi Strom and Jessica Lam hit back to back three-pointers to take an eight-point advantage, 48-40. The Eagles would build the lead to 13, 55-42 with three minutes to play, but Kanisha Wiley hit a jumper to cut into the Eagle lead. However, Bridgewater's lead held through the final minutes. Roanoke closed the final 30 seconds outscoring Bridgewater 5-0, as Wagner hit a layup and Beckwith drained a three in the final moment of the game. Bridgewater picked up the win 61-51 in the ODAC matchup on Saturday.

Cassidy Burkholder and Jessica Lam led the Eagles with 17 points apiece in today's contest. Lam hit seven shots from the floor, as well as pulling down three rebounds with five assists. She also tallied two steals. Burkholder hit six from the field and was 5-5 from the free throw line. She had two rebounds, one assist, two steals and two blocks. Heather Cantrell led the Eagles with nine, while Kaitlyn Lehan followed with seven boards.

Bridgewater outshot the Maroons 45.5 to 27.9 percent from the field, while Eagles also led in free throws 100 to 90.9 percent. Roanoke led in the rebounding game, 43-37, but Bridgewater topped the Maroons in assists 13-12.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, February 11th, as they play host to Guilford College in the Bast Center. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
