Maroons Fall in Regular Season Finale to Eastern Mennonite
HARRISONBURG - The Roanoke College women's basketball team fell in its regular season finale against the top team in the ODAC, Eastern Mennonite, 95-63 on Sunday. The Maroons will enter the ODAC Tournament with the #11 seed with a record in the regular season of 8-17, 4-12 in ODAC play. The Royals are the #1 seed in the ODAC Tournament with a record of 21-3, 15-1 in ODAC play.

The Maroons, with the #11 seed in the ODAC Tournament, will enter the first round against #6 seed Washington & Lee on Tuesday, February 24th at 7:00 PM. The opening round contest will be played in Lexington, VA to determine who will advance to play the Salem Civic Center in the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Maroons went 0-2 against the Generals in the regular season, but took W&L to overtime on January 27th, leading by as many as 16 points. Roanoke tied for ninth in the ODAC with Shenandoah and Randolph. Shenandoah won the #9 seed with a 2-1 record between the three teams, while Randolph, who played each team twice, got the 10th seed with a record of 2-2. The Maroons went 1-2 against the two other teams, picking up the #11 seed.

Cary Beahm led the Maroons with 22 points, shooting 9-12 from the field for a mark of 75 percent. She also led the squad with seven rebounds, pulling down five offensive boards, leading all players in the game in that category. Beahm tallied her 11th game this season scoring 20 points or more, with this being her first since February 4th against Emory & Henry. She ranks second in the ODAC in points (442) and points per game (17.7). Beahm also ranks first in the conference in free throws made, putting away 104 this season.

Allison Yeaw scored a career high 13 points on Sunday, hitting 6-16 from the field. She also pulled down four rebounds. Meghan Gadell and Bridget Holleran each finished the contest with eight points apiece. Gadell hit two three pointers, while pulling down four rebounds. Jamella Foster and Ellen Wagner each ranked second on the squad in rebounds, finishing with five rebounds each.

EMU started the first half on a 7-0 run in the first three minutes behind the shooting of Shakeerah Sykes and Marla Zumfelde. Bridget Holleran scored the first points for the Maroons at the 16:38 mark, hitting a jumper. Beahm followed with a basket of her own to get the Maroons back within three, 7-4. Over the next five minutes, the Maroons outscored the Royals 5-2, including baskets by Yeaw, Holleran and Gadell, tying the game at 9-9 with 12:55 left in the half. Jess Rheinheimer and Alisa Brown stopped the Roanoke run by hitting back to back three-pointers. EMU followed those threes with two more baskets to extend their lead to 10 points, 19-9. Gadell hit a three of her own, but Rheinheimer scored nine of the Royals next 12, unanswered, points. Roanoke was held scoreless through the 3:02 mark, where Beahm snapped the Royals' streak with a layup. Roanoke trailed by 29 at halftime, 49-20.

EMU scored the first five points of the second half, before Meghan Gadell drained a three pointer at the end of the first minute of play. The top-ranked Royals continued to build on their first half lead during the second half, pushing to a 71-31 lead. However, Roanoke kept fighting back, as Beahm scored six consecutive points starting at the 12:30 mark. Yeaw made a basket of her own to keep cutting at the deficit. With 4:57 to play, Ellen Wagner went off for the Maroons scoring six consecutive points. Allison Yeaw followed with a jumper and a three-pointer. Jamella Foster scored the final four points for Ronaoke on a jumper and a layup, but the Royals' lead was too large to overcome, as Roanoke fell 95-63.

The Royals were led in scoring by Jess Rheinheimer with 19 points. Rheinheimer is the top scorer in the ODAC, averaging 19.6 points per game, which also ranks 25th in the nation. She shot 8-12 from the floor and hit 3-5 from behind the arc. Shakeerah Sykes put together a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, including eight defensive rebounds. Chanel Shands also finished in double-figures, putting up 10 points on Sunday.

The Royals outshot the Maroons 50.7 to 34.7 percent from the field, while also holding a 86.7 to 72.7 percent advantage from the free throw line. EMU also led in rebounds (49-38) and assists (20-12).

The Maroons will be back in action on Tuesday, February 24th as they travel to Lexington to play in the first round of the ODAC Tournament. Roanoke will face off against Washington & Lee with a 7:00 PM tip-off.
