Maroons Close 2014-15 Season, Fall to W&L in ODAC Tournament Opener
LEXINGTON - The Roanoke College women's basketball season came to a close on Tuesday evening after falling in the opening round of the 2015 ODAC Tournament to Washington & Lee, 68-47. The Maroons, who were the #11 seed in the Tournament, finish the season with a mark of 8-18, 4-12 in ODAC regular season play, while the #6 seed Generals advance to the ODAC Quarterfinals with a record of 16-9.

The 2014-15 season was the first for Carla Flaherty at the helm of the Roanoke College women's basketball program. She led the Maroons to a 4-0 start to the season, which is the best start for a Maroon women's basketball program since 2009-10.

Cary Beahm had an outstanding season as a sophomore, finishing the season in the top-10 in eight statistical categories in the ODAC including free throws made (1st - 107), points (2nd - 449), points per game (2nd - 17.3), rebounds (8th - 196) and rebounds per game (9th - 7.5). She tallied 11 games with 20 points or more, including a 33 point effort against Salem College, which the third best all-time single-game scoring mark in the division III era at Roanoke College.

Tatum McKee finished the season in the top-20 all-time at Roanoke College in eight different statistical categories. She is 8th all-time in steals with 192, 11th in rebounds after pulling down 604 rebounds. She also ranked in the top-20 in free throws attempted (12th - 327), free throws made (13th - 222) and three pointers made (16th - 64). Meghan Gadell ranks 17th all-time at Roanoke in three-pointers made, hitting 60 in her career.

This was only the second game this season in which no Maroon scored 10 points or more. Senior Hannah Ward led the Maroons in scoring with eight points, hitting 4-6 from the field. Cary Beahm and Bridget Holleran each tallied seven points in the game, with Holleran leading the squad with seven rebounds. Beahm was second on the team in rebounding, pulling down five boards on the evening.

Kanisha Wiley scored the first two points of the game, giving the Maroons an early lead in the contest. However, the Generals started on an 11-2 run after that, capped by Shelbi Hendricks with an old fashioned three point play. At the 13:54 mark in the first half, W&L led 11-4. Ellen Wagner and Holleran each hit jumpers over the next minute to cut the deficit to three points. After a three by W&L's Gauf, Beahm also converted with three points of her own to keep the Generals lead to three. After Washington & Lee's Ferrero hit a three pointer, there was a three minute span of a scoring drought. However, Gadell broke the scoreless streak with a pair of free throws, which Holleran added to to get the Maroons within three again, 17-14 with 6:12 to play. Washington & Lee followed with three consecutive three pointers to widen the gap to 12 points. Jamella Foster, Beahm and Wagner combined for six points in the final three minutes of the game as Roanoke trailed by 15 at halftime, 35-20.

Roanoke and W&L traded baskets back and forth in the opening two minutes of the second half, with Roanoke still trailing by 15. The Generals then went on a 15-0 run through the 11:56 mark to take a 26-point, 54-28 advantage. The Maroons followed with a 6-2 run of their own, led by Hannah Ward with four points. Over the next couple of Minutes, Roanoke's next three points came from Markia Beckwith free throws, while Hannah Ward and Kanisha Wiley hit back to back jumpers at the four minute mark, as W&L led 61-39. Roanoke scored eight unanswered points in the final 1:20 of the contest, but the Generals' lead was too large to overcome in the final minutes as Roanoke fell 68-47.

Katie Wildes led the Generals in scoring with 14 points, going 6-7 from the floor. She also tallied five rebounds. Paige Corvino topped the squad in rebounds, pulling down seven boards to go along with her seven points. Andrea Ferrero was second on the team In scoring with nine points, all coming from shots behind the arc. Annie Gauf dished out a game-high six assists, while Shelbi Hendricks finished with five.

Washington and Lee outshot the Maroons 46.7 to 30.2 percent from the field, while the Maroons held the advantage at the free throw line, 62.8 to 62.5 percent. The Generals also led in rebounds (43-32) and assists (16-5).

Washington & Lee advances to the ODAC Quarterfinals in the Salem Civic Center on Friday, February 27th. The Generals will face off against #3 seed Lynchburg College at 8:00 PM.
