Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight, Defeats Averett 65-56
DANVILLE - For the first time since 2009-10, the Roanoke College women's basketball team starts the season with a record of 3-0. The Maroons defeated Averett University 65-56 on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

Roanoke, under new head coach Carla Flaherty has started the season off undefeated in the first three games of the year. The last time the Maroons started with three consecutive wins was in the 2009-10 season, where the Maroons started the season winning the first six contests. In that season, the Maroons advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

For the second game this season, sophomore Cary Beahm led the Maroons in scoring, putting away 19 points in the victory over Averett. Beahm shot 9-15 from the floor, while also pulling down nine rebounds. Through three games, Beahm is averaging 15.3 points per game. The current ODAC Player of the Week, Tatum McKee finished the game with her second double-double of the season, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She also dished out three assists. McKee is currently averaging 16 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per contest. Kelsey Smith was third in scoring, netting nine points, while tallying six rebounds. She led the Maroons with five assists, tied with Markia Beckwith.

Through the first eight minutes of the first half, Roanoke held a 11-6 lead, which saw five different Maroons find the basket. Starting at 10:06, Roanoke went on an 11-2 run, which included four points from both Beahm and Bridget Holleran each. In the final five minutes of the half, McKee scored four of the team's final eight points. Entering halftime, Roanoke led by nine over Averett, 30-21.

Meghan Gadell and Smith each opened the second half by knocking down a trey, giving Roanoke a 13-point, 36-23 advantage in the first two minutes. After Holleran knocked down a pair of free throws, the Maroons were held scoreless for over four minutes, as Averett pulled within four, 40-36. However, Cary Beahm snapped the drought by hitting five consecutive points, followed by a Smith jumper to put the Maroons back up by 11, 47-36. Starting at 8:28, Beahm hit three consecutive baskets, extending the Roanoke lead to 56-42. The Cougars would only get back within nine points, as Roanoke picked up the non-conference victory, 65-56.

The Cougars were led in scoring by Jessica Myers, who tallied 15 points with five rebounds. She also finished with three assists. Samm Chandler was second on the squad with 13 points and a team high nine rebounds. She also dished out three assists and finished with five steals. Jonna Koski went 6-14 with 12 points, while Brianna Taylor also finished in double-digits, with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Maroons return to action on November 25th, as they travel to Lynchburg to face off against Randolph College in Roanoke's Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener. That contest is scheduled for a 5:30 PM start.
