Maroons Hold On To Win ODAC Opener Over Randolph, 65-61
LYNCHBURG - The Roanoke College women's basketball team has won its fourth straight contest after defeating Randolph College 65-61 in the Maroons ODAC opener on Tuesday evening. The Maroons now have a record of 4-0, 1-0 in ODAC play, while the WildCats are 3-1, 0-1 in the ODAC.

The Maroons continue their best start to a season since 2009-10, where the team got off to a 6-0 start. Roanoke was ranked #10 in the ODAC preseason poll, three spots behind the WildCats, but for the 14th consecutive meeting, Roanoke topped Randolph College.

For the third game this season, Cary Beahm has led the Maroons in scoring, this time netting 13 points. She also tallied the second most rebounds on the squad, pulling down seven boards. Also tied with Beahm in scoring was Markia Beckwith, who shot 5-9 from the field with two steals and four rebounds. Tatum McKee was the third best scorer for the Maroons on the night, putting together 12 points and 10 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. McKee is averaging 15 PPG and 9.8 RPG for the year through the first four games of the 2014-15 campaign.

The two teams nearly matched each other shot for shot in the first half, both hitting 40 percent from the field. Roanoke and Randolph entered the locker room at half tied at 29-29. Beckwith led the Maroons with 11 first half points.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Roanoke jumped out to a 12-4 run, with Beahm scoring eight of the Maroons 12 points. At the 14:40 mark, Roanoke led 41-33. However, over the next three minutes, the WildCats were able to knot the game back up at 45-45 with a run capped by an Abigail Bullins trey.

Another five minute Randolph run saw the WildCats outscore Roanoke 10-2, taking an eight point advantage with five minutes to play. The Maroons bounced back, with Noreen Mulledy and Kelsey Smith hitting big time three pointers, along with free throws from McKee and a basket by Beahm. Roanoke reclaimed the lead, 57-55 with 2:21 to play in the contest. With a two point advantage, Smith and McKee knocked down a combined six free throws in the final 26 seconds, icing the contest and giving the Maroons the 65-61 victory in the ODAC opener.

Abigail Bullins led the WildCats in scoring with 21 points on the night. Bullins is the second leading scorer in the ODAC with 18.5 points per game. She was the only WildCat in double figures in the ODAC contest. Allie Druffel finished the game with eight points and led all players with 13 rebounds.

The Maroons outshot the WildCats 40 to 38.6 percent from the field, while Randolph was more successful from behind the arc 47.1 to 26.7 percent. The WildCats also held the edge in rebounds, pulling down 40 to Roanoke's 35. The Maroons tallied one more assist (15-14), as well as three less turnovers (18-15).

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, November 30th as they travel to play Ferrum College. That non-conference contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
