Maroons Fall in Home Opener to Lynchburg on Wednesday
SALEM - The Roanoke College women's basketball team fell in its home opener on Wednesday, dropping an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest against Lynchburg 74-55. The Maroons now have a record of 4-2, 1-1 in ODAC play, while the Hornets are 4-2, 1-0 in the ODAC.

For the fifth time in six games, Cary Beahm led the Maroons in scoring, tallying 20 points, shooting 1-0-13 from the field. She also finished the game with a team high nine rebounds. The sophomore has 97 points in six games, averaging 16.2 points per game, which ranks sixth in the ODAC. Beahm is also averaging 7.3 rebounds per contest, which is the eighth best mark in the conference. She has also scored 15 or more points in four of the six conference, twice tallying 20 points.

Bridget Holleran was the second highest scorer for the Maroons, tallying nine points. Allison Yeaw finished with six points, shooting 2-4 from behind the arc. Tatum McKee pulled down the second most rebounds, grabbing four boards, all defensive.

Lynchburg's first half offense was bolstered by three pointers that came at opportune times. Roanoke's largest lead of the game just five minutes into the contest. Roanoke went on a 6-0 run after a Noreen Mulledy three pointer, followed by an old fashioned three point play by Markia Beckwith. Roanoke led Lynchburg 10-6 at the 14:58 mark in the half. The Hornets turned the tide with a 10 run of their own, with a pair of three pointers and two layups, with Shannon Allan scoring five of the 10 points. Later in the half, the Hornets hit three-pointers on three consecutive trips down the floor, building a 27-15 advantage with seven minutes left to play. Lynchburg held on to that lead to enter the locker room at half with a 37-26 lead.

After Lynchburg scored on the opening drive of the second half, Holleran hit a three pointer to get the Maroons back within 10 points. Roanoke broke the 10-point deficit at 13:26 mark after Tatum McKee went on a 5-0 run capped by a trey of her own. Roanoke trailed 46-38 with 13 minutes to play. Through the eight minute mark, Roanoke floated around a 10-point Lynchburg lead, with Allison Yeaw and Beahm hitting shots to keep the deficit to 10 points. In the final minutes of the game, the Hornets built a 15-4 run, putting the Maroons down by 21, 74-53 with 1:31 to play in the game. Beahm netted the final basket of the game to get her 20th point, but Roanoke fell to Lynchburg in ODAC play, 74-55.

The Hornets were led in scoring by Shannon Allan, who tallied 20 points off of 8-14 shooting. She even managed a 4-6 clip from behind the three point line. Chaney Forbush followed in scoring with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Allan followed in boards with six of her own. Sammi Goldsmith and Allan dished out team-highs in assists, finishing with five apiece on the night. The Hornets finished the evening with a perfect 8-8 mark from the free throw line.

Lynchburg shot 50 percent from the field, while the Maroons had a 39.7 percent shooting mark from the floor. The Hornets led in rebounds (38-28), assists (22-11) and points in the paint (32-26). Both teams finished with 16 turnovers, with Roanoke holding the advantage in points off turnovers (18-13).

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, December 7th, as they host a non-conference game in the Bast Center against Sewanee University. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
