Women Fall To Marymount in Friday's Daytona Beach Opener
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Roanoke College women's basketball team fell in their first game in the 2014 Daytona Beach Shootout, 56-32 to Marymount on Friday afternoon. The Maroons now have a record of 4-4, while the Saints sit with a mark of 7-2.

This is the first of two games for the Maroons in Daytona Beach. Early on Saturday morning, the Maroons will face off against SUNY Oneonta at 10:00 AM in the final game of the Florida winter break trip. With the loss to Marymount, Roanoke now has a 4-4 all-time record against the Saints, with Marymount having won the last two contests.

Roanoke was led in scoring by Markia Beckwith, tallying 11 points on 4-5 shooting. She finished the game with three rebounds and two steals. Hannah Ward was second on the squad in scoring, finishing with nine points, also on 4-5 shooting. Cary Beahm and Ellen Wagner both led the Maroons in rebounds, pulling down six boards each. Beahm also led the team in steals with three.

Marymount's Kiki Laux scored the first point of the game at 19:26, but Roanoke took its only lead of the game two minutes later when Meghan Gadell hit a three pointer to put the Maroons ahead 5-4. However, Marymount hit three consecutive baskets to build a six point, 11-5 lead with 16:20 to play. Through the 10 minute mark, the Saints outscored Roanoke 8-4. Roanoke scored to pull back within eight points, when Beckwith hit a jumper at 9:25, making the score 19-11. The Saints went on another run through the 2:55 mark, outscoring the Maroons 11-2. Through the end of the first half Roanoke trailed 32-16.

Roanoke scored five points out of the gate in the second half, pulling within 11 points, 32-21. Hannah Ward and Beckwith each hit layups in the first minute of the half to cut the defecit. However, Marymount's Kiki Laux responded with three consecutive made jumpers, putting the Saints ahead by 17. Roanoke trailed by the same amount with 9:43 to play after Beahm hit a free throw to make the score 45-28. Hannah Ward scored the next three points for the Maroons through 8:27, Roanoke now trailing by 16, 47-31. Roanoke would score just one more point in the remaining minutes of the contest, a Beckwith free throw with 5:11 left to play, now down by 20, 52-32. The Saints scored only four more points in the final five minutes, as Roanoke fell 56-32 on Friday.

The Saints had three players who tallied double-figures in scoring. Kievanna Lacey led the Saints with 13 points, making five of her eight attempts. She also tallied five of the team's 16 steals, leading Marymount in that category. Miranda Krott and Kiki Laux finished with 12 points apiece. Krott put together a double-double adding 17 rebounds, seven offensive and 10 defensive. Samantha Kane finished second on the team in rebounds with eight of her own.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM, as they take on Oneonta in the team's last game of the 2014 Daytona Beach Shootout.
