The Lead: Virginia Wesleyan knocked down 12 three-pointers as the ninth-seeded Marlins topped eighth-seeded Roanoke 68-65 in the first-round of the 2016 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament.
How it Happened:
- Roanoke was led by Bridget Holleran and Kelsey Smith who each had 17 points. Holleran also tied for the game-high in rebounds with nine and dished out seven assists, while Smith had a game-high eight helpers.
- RC drained a season-high eight three-pointers led by Smith with five. The Maroons shot 44.8% from the floor for the game, making 26-of-58 shots from the field.
- Virginia Wesleyan got a game-high 23 points from Jayla Harris and 19 points from Kelly Jones. The Marlins made 23-of-66 shots from the field, including 12-of-37 from beyond the arc.
- RC led 15-12 and would close the first quarter on a 7-0 run that was capped by a Lauryn Taylor bucket with just under a minute to go, giving the Maroons a 22-12 lead after one.
- An Allison Yeaw jumper to start the second quarter put RC up 24-12, but the Marlins would out score the Maroons 13-0 over a six minute span to take a 25-24 lead.
- RC responded by scoring eight of the final 12 points, getting a three-pointer from Holleran to send the teams to the break with the Maroons up 32-28.
- With Roanoke leading 53-51 in the fourth quarter, Harris knocked down a three to give VWC the lead for good 54-53 edge with 5:48 to play.
- The Marlins lead was six after a pair of Crystal Strother free-throws made it 65-59 with just 20 seconds remaining.
- RC got a pair of three pointers from Smith, the second of which made it 66-65 with 10 seconds to go. Naeemah Morris made a pair of shots from the free-throw line on VWC's ensuing possession to put the Marlins up 68-65.
- Roanoke had a chance to tie the game but Beahm's three-point attempt as time expired fell short after she was knocked to the floor.
