The Lead: Kelsey Smith and Cary Beahm each scored 16 points as Roanoke College topped Ferrum 67-61 Saturday afternoon in women's basketball action in Salem.

How it Happened:
  • The Maroons overcame a sluggish start that saw the Panthers hold an 11-7 lead after the first period.
  • RC outscored Ferrum 23-11 in the second stanza. In that period a Beahm bucket put RC in front 19-17 and sparked what would prove to be a 13-4 run to close the half to send Roanoke to the locker room up 30-22.
  • Roanoke opened up the second-half by scoring eight of the first 10 points taking a 14 point lead on a Beahm layup 6:35 to go in the third quarter.
  • RC entered the fourth period with a 12 point lead only to see Ferrum chip away and make it a four point contest with 2:19 left to play. The Maroons responded with a big bucket from Anna Carter and two free-throws by Smith that extended the lead to 65-57 with 11 seconds to play.
  • Carter joined Smith and Beahm in double-figures with 13 points.Bridget Holleran had eight points and Ellen Wagner came off the bench to score seven points for RC.
  • The Maroons assisted on 15 of their 26 made field goals with four different players registering three assists.
  • Ferrum was led by Zarkia Mattox who had a game-high 23 points and Kemani Crawford who had 18 in the loss.
