The Basics
Score: Roanoke 66 | Albright 55
Records: Maroons 2-0 | Lions 1-2
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Cregger Center was scheduled to play host to the, four-team, four-game, Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic over the weekend. However, with one of the out-of-town teams unable to travel, the Maroons would play just a single game on Sunday afternoon. Roanoke took on Albright College and the Lions would jump on the Maroons early, building as much as a seven point lead, 10-3. A Roanoke rally would allow the Maroons to come all the way back and hold a 20-16 edge after one quarter of play. RC would stretch out their advantage throughout the afternoon as Roanoke picked up a 15-point win, to start the season 2-0.

How it Happened:

  • The Lions jumped on Roanoke early, building a 10-3 lead, forcing a Maroon timeout. However, the final six plus minutes of the opening frame belonged to the home team. Morgan Micallef hit a free throw followed by a jumper to spark the Maroon comeback. The period would end with free throws by JaBryah Haverkamp and Lauren Keel as Roanoke closed the first with a 20-16 advantage.
  • Six straight to start the second period would push the lead to double-digits for the first time. Albright hung around and cut the deficit to seven before a Rose Sande 3-pointer to close the half pushed the RC edge back to 10 at the break.
  • A Micallef jumper pushed the lead to 14 in the opening stages of the third quarter. The close the frame, Kristina Harrel nailed a jump shot and Whitney Hopson sank a pair of free throws to make it 56-37 heading into the final period of play.
  • With six minutes to play, the lead grew to 21 on a Sayre Brandstatter layup. Both teams would empty the benches late as Roanoke closed out the weekend with a 66-51 win.
  • Harrel went 6-6 from the field on her way to a game-high 16 points. Micallef had 13 points to go with eight rebounds while Haverkamp (12) and Sande (10) made it a quartet of Maroons in double figures. Harell and Micallef were named to the All-Tournament team with Micallef being named the Tournament MVP.

Up next: Roanoke will play host to Meredith at 5:00pm on Wednesday as the opener of a women's and men's double header.
