The Basics
Score: Roanoke 74 | Mary Baldwin 37
Records: Maroons 4-0 | Fighting Squirrels 4-3
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The 3-0 Roanoke College Women's basketball team was back in action after over a 12-day layoff when they welcomed Mary Baldwin to the Cregger Center on Monday night. The Squirrels brought a 4-0 mark against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competition into the matchup. The Maroons blew open a close game with a 13-2 run to close the first quarter and never looked back as they picked up their fourth consecutive victory, 74-37, to start the season.

How it Happened:

  • With the score 10-8, a JaBryah Haverkamp jump shot sparked a 10-0 Roanoke run. After a Squirrel hoop, Lauren Keel closed out the opening frame with a 3-pointer to make it 23-10.
  • Kristina Harrel and Whitney Hopson went back-to-back in the opening minute of the second period. With 4:18 before the half, Haverkamp pushed the lead to 20 for the first time, 37-17. The Maroon defense wouldn't let Mary Baldwin score another first-half point as RC took a 41-17 advantage into the locker room.
  • Another Haverkamp jump shot made it 55-25 with just over a minute left to play in the third.
  • Madelyn Duren grew the lead to 68-30 with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws by Ayanna Scarborough would close out the scoring and give Roanoke the 74-37 win.
  • Harrel led all scorers with 14 and Peyton Kirchner came off the bench to add 10. 11 different Maroons would score including 39 bench points. Sayre Brandstatter had a game-high nine rebounds while she and Hopson each would hand out six assists. Keel added seven rebounds to her nine points.

Up next: Roanoke begins ODAC play on Wednesday when they host, cross-town rival, Hollins on the back end of a men's/women's back-to-back. The tip with Hollins is scheduled for 7:30 or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the RC/Bridgewater men's game.
