The Lead: The undefeated Roanoke College Women's basketball team took the court on Wednesday night to start Old Dominion athletic Conference (ODAC) play against a Hollins team that came in 1-0 in the conference. With 2:40 left in the first, Hollins enjoyed a 17-15 advantage. However, the Maroons used a 20-8 surge to end the first quarter and start the second to seize control of the matchup. Roanoke would continue to stretch the lead throughout the remainder of the game for their first ODAC win of the season, 78-55.

How it Happened:

  • The two, cross-town, rivals would trade the lead for the first eight minutes of the matchup. With the score tied at 19-19, Roanoke got a Morgan Micallef layup and free throw to take a 22-19 lead after one period of play.
  • The second quarter would belong to the Maroons. Three consecutive 3-pointers, two by Renee Alquiza and one for Kristina Harrel,would see RC start to pull away. JaBryah Haverkamp made it a 10-point lead for the first time with a layup at the 6:56 mark. Roanoke closed the half on a 12-8 run to take a 47-33 advantage into the locker room.
  • Peyton Kirchner and Alquiza scored to push the lead to 58-38 midway through the third quarter. Hollins scored five straight but a pair of Kirchner free throws made it 64-47 with 10:00 left to play.
  • With 4:30 left to play, Alquiza hit her fourth and fifth 3-pointers of the night to make it a 72-49 Roanoke lead. The Maroons would score six of the final eight points to make it a 78-55 ODAC win.
  • Alquiza led all scorers with 21 points, including 5-6 from long range. Harrel had 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals while Haverkamp came off the bench to score 18. Roanoke would record assists on 22 of their 29 made field goals for the game.
