The Lead: After opening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday night, the Roanoke women's basketball team traveled to Eastern Mennonite for a Saturday afternoon tip. The Maroons used a 12-5 first quarter to take control of the game. An 11-point halftime lead would grow during the third quarter as Roanoke went on the road and came home with the 70-56, ODAC, victory.

How it Happened:

  • Eastern Mennonite scored first, but a Whitney Hopson 3-pointer would cap a 10-0 Roanoke surge to put the Maroons in front. Peyton Kirchner scored in the closing seconds to make it 12-5, RC, after one period of play.
  • A Lauren Keel layup followed by a Kristina Harrel jumper would give the Maroons their first double-digit lead of the afternoon, 18-8. The Royals closed the gap to seven with two-minutes left before the half, but Roanoke would answer to close the frame on a 6-2 run to take a 30-19 advantage into the break.
  • JaBryah Haverkamp put the visitors up by 15, less than two-minutes into the second half and later in the period, a Harrel layup pushed the lead to 50-30. A pair of Hopson free throws made it 52-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • EMU would take the finale, 20-18, but Roanoke went to 6-0 to start the season (2-0 in the ODAC) with the 70-56 road win.
  • Harrel led all scorers with 15 while Morgan Micallef added 14 points and seven rebounds. Renee Alquiza just missed a double-double when she finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots. Sayre Brandstatter handed out seven of the Maroon's 12 assists.
