The Lead: After suffering their first defeat of the season on Wednesday, the Roanoke College women's basketball team looked to get back on track on the final day of the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic. The Maroons would face a stiff test as they welcomed the #6 Captains of Christopher Newport to the Cregger Center. Roanoke enjoyed a seven-point advantage late in the first quarter. However, CNU would storm back and use relentless pressure throughout the game to pull away for the easy win, 101-70.

How it Happened:

  • Sayre Brandstatter hit a game opening 3-pointer as Roanoke would score the first five points of the contest. With 2:44 remaining in the first quarter, Renee Alquiza nailed a three-ball from the corner to push the Roanoke lead to seven, 19-12. Christopher Newport scored the final six points of the frame to make it a one-point spread, 19-18.
  • Kristina Harrel scored to open the second period before a three-pointer by the Captains would tie the score. Six more Captain points saw the visitors from Newport News take the lead, a lead that would grow throughout the next seven minutes. 13, second quarter, turnovers would open the gates as Roanoke was outscored 30-8 leading into the break.
  • Another Brandstatter 3-pointer would close the gap to 19, but that was as close as the Maroons would get. CNU pushed their advantage to 74-44 heading into the final period of play.
  • The Maroons would record their best offensive quarter over the final 10 minutes of play by putting 26 points on the scoreboard. But in the end, the Captain's defensive pressure proved to be too much as Christopher Newport cruised to a 101-70 victory.
  • Harrel paced the Roanoke offense with 17 while Alquiza and Rose Sande would finish with nine apiece. Brandstatter had a team high six rebounds with Sande adding five boards.

Up next: Roanoke will look to get back to their winning ways with a makeup game against Hood College on Sunday, January 2nd at 2:00pm in the Cregger Center.
