The Lead: The second of four straight road games for the Roanoke women would see a trip to Winchester to face Shenandoah on Wednesday night. The Maroons defeated the Hornets in Salem by double-digits back in December. Both teams would struggle to score in a first half that would end with Shenandoah taking a 25-19 advantage into the locker room. Roanoke rallied to tie the game with just over two-minutes left to play and took a three-point lead into the final minute. The Hornets would close the game by scoring the final six-points of the night as Shenandoah picked up the 57-54 win.

How it Happened:

  • The first five minutes of the contest would see the score tied at 6-6. Shenandoah scored seven of the next nine points to take a 13-8 edge with 3:00 remaining into the opening period. A Morgan Micallef free throw and Ayanna Scarborough jumper cut the deficit to two. The teams would trade hoops and the Hornets took a 15-13 advantage into the second quarter.
  • Roanoke struggled from the field during the second frame, shooting just 9% (1-11). Shenandoah took advantage and built a 25-19 lead at the break.
  • The home team would push their lead to 27-19 in the opening minute before a Roanoke run would get the Maroons back into the matchup. Kristina Harrel scored to spark a 6-2 surge to cut the Hornets lead to 29-25.
  • Renee Alquiza got RC to within three with a shot from long range at the midway point of the quarter. Shenandoah opened the lead back to eight when Scarborough, Harrel, and JaBryah Haverkamp answered to make it a 2-point spread in the final minute. Just before the horn, Scarborough would get the Maroons even closer as the Hornet lead was down to one, 44-43, with 10-minutes left to decide it.
  • The lead would go back and forth and the Hornets held a 51-50 edge with 2:03 left on the clock. Rose Sande made a pair of free throws to give Roanoke the lead. Scarborough added another jump shot and with 47 seconds to play, RC held a 54-51 edge. The Hornets would score on consecutive possessions with Roanoke missing on each of their opportunities forcing a timeout, down 55-54, with just 12 ticks remaining. Another missed shot forced the Maroons to foul, falling down 57-54 with just three seconds to play. A Maroon timeout allowed the ball to advance to midcourt. A last second, game tying, three-pointer was off the mark and Roanoke fell for the first time in conference play.
  • Harrel led Roanoke with 16 points while Scarborough added 13 points and seven rebounds. Alquiza netted nine with Sande scoring eight.

Up next: Roanoke traveled to Randolph-Macon on Friday for a 5:30pm game with the Yellow Jackets before continuing to the eastern shore for a game with Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
