The Lead: The Roanoke College women's basketball team traveled to Virginia Beach looking to get back on track against the Marlins on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons took the court less than 24 hours after playing an overtime game at Randolph-Macon last night. Roanoke scored first and never trailed as they outscored Virginia Wesleyan 42-13 during the middle two quarters on their way to a 75-39, road, win.

How it Happened:

  • Renee Alquiza got the afternoon started with a three-pointer followed by a Morgan Micallef layup. Ayanna Scarborough scored from the free throw line as RC had built a 10-2 advantage after just five-minutes of play.
  • After a 5-0 Marlin run, the Maroons once again pulled away for an 18-11 lead at the end of the period.
  • A balanced Roanoke attack would see eight different players score during a second quarter that would see the visitors outscore their hosts, 19-6. The Maroons had built their 37-17 halftime lead after going 9-12 from the free throw line during the second stanza.
  • Kristina Harrel scored out of the break to help spark a 10-5 run during the first five-minutes. A pair of Scarborough free throws would push the RC advantage to 53-22 and then JaBryah Haverkamp added six points over the remainder of the period as the RC lead would be 60-24 heading into the fourth.
  • Rose Sande drilled a three-pointer to push the lead to 40, allowing Coach Flaherty to substitute freely the final 7:30 of the matchup. In the end, 11 different players would score in the 75-39, Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), win.
  • Scarborough would finish with 13 points and seven boards while Sande posted 14 points and five rebounds. Alquiza had 11 and Haverkamp went 6-10 from the line on her way to 10 points. Whitney Hopson handed out eight assists and picked up four steals as Roanoke picked up their second win over the Marlins this season.

Up next: The Maroons will be back in action again on Monday night with a visit from conference leading Washington and Lee at 7:00pm.
