The Basics
Score: Roanoke 67 | Lynchburg 50
Records: Maroons 17-5 / 12-3 ODAC | Hornets 12-9 / 8-6 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Wednesday night was the annual "Maroon Madness" in the Cregger Center as the Maroons would welcome the defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference champs from Lynchburg to Salem. Roanoke won on the Hornets court, 69-58, back in December and looked to complete the season sweep in front of a big home crowd. The tightly contested first half would see Lynchburg take a 26-24 edge into the half. However, the third quarter belonged to the home team as Roanoke would explode for 32 points in the period and finish off the Hornets with a 67-50, ODAC, win.

How it Happened:

  • Kristina Harrel and Morgan Micallef made the home fans happy as Roanoke took a 4-0 lead out of the gate. However, Lynchburg would score eight straight to take a four-point lead of their own.
  • The lead would be traded before a JaBryah Haverkamp hoop with :39 to play staked the Maroons to a 15-14 first quarter lead.
  • Another Lynchburg run would see the defending champs start the second stanza with the first six points, taking a 20-15 advantage. Trailing by five with 1:13 left before the break, Roanoke would use a Whitney Hopson three-pointer to cut their deficit to 26-24 at the half.
  • The Maroons would use the three-point line (6-10) to explode in the third quarter. Harrel came out of the locker room and immediately put the Maroons in front. When the game was tied at 31-31, Harrel hit another from beyond the arc to spark a 12-0 Roanoke run that included a 3-pointer by Sayre Brandstatter and a pair from Renee Alquiza.
  • Another Alquiza triple pushed the RC lead to 50-35 and when she added a layup before the horn, the Roanoke lead had grown to 56-37.
  • With 7:17 left to play, Ayanna Scarborough scored the first of back-to-back buckets to see the lead go to 23 points. Lynchburg would trim the lead but Harrel made it 66-46 with just over 2:00 left on the clock.
  • Five Maroons would end up in double figures led by Alquiza with 13. Haverkamp and Scarborough came off the bench to score 12 apiece while Harrel and Micallef added 10 each. Hopson dictated the flow of the game with five points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists. The Roanoke defense during the third quarter was the difference as the Maroons held the Hornets to just 3-14 from the field (21.4%).

Up next: The Maroons will complete their three-game home stand on Saturday when they welcome Eastern Mennonite to Salem for a 2pm tip.
