The Lead: Roanoke College opened the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday night when they took on defending champion Lynchburg. The Maroons had defeated the Hornets twice during the regular season and looked to make it three in a row in their tournament opener. The first half would see six lead changes and four ties as the teams went into the break in a 26-26 deadlock. Lynchburg exploded out of the break with seven straight points and would build a 12-point, fourth quarter lead. Roanoke stormed back and cut it to two in the closing seconds but couldn't complete the comeback and fell to the Hornets, 63-58.

How it Happened:

  • Renee Alquiza hit a 3-pointer on Roanoke's first possession. Up 7-4, Kristina Harrel hit a jump shot to give the Maroons a five-point advantage with 5:04 left in the first quarter. However, Roanoke would be held scoreless the remainder of the period and Lynchburg took an 11-9 lead into the second frame.
  • After the Hornets pushed their edge to four, back-to-back baskets by JaBryah Haverkamp would knot the score at 13-13. Lynchburg would re-take the lead and hold it until a Rose Sande three-pointer put RC back in front, 21-19.
  • A pair of Alquiza free throws saw Roanoke in the lead before Lynchburg finished the first half hitting one of two free throws and the game was tied, 26-26, at the break.
  • Coming out of the half, Lynchburg would score the first seven points, forcing a Roanoke timeout. The stoppage did nothing to halt the Lynchburg surge as the Hornets pushed their advantage to 38-27 with 5:04 left in the period.
  • Ayanna Scarborough started and a Sayre Brandstatter triple ended a 7-0 run to get Roanoke back into the game. Lynchburg scored the final points of the quarter and took a 41-34 edge into the final 10-minutes of play.
  • With 8:22 left to play, the Hornets grew their lead to 50-38 forcing another Roanoke timeout. This time the Maroons responded out of the break. A Scarborough layup was followed by a made 12-footer by Morgan Micallef and another Alquiza 3-ball got the Maroons to within 50-45.
  • The deficit would once again reach double-digits, 55-45, with just over five-minutes left to play. Harrel hit a pair of free throws and then Brandstatter scored four straight points to cut into the Lynchburg lead. Two Scarborough free throws followed by a layup got RC to within 57-55 and the defense got the stop they needed to set up a game-tying possession. However, Roanoke missed the shot and were forced to foul.
  • Trailing by five with :25 on the clock, Brandstatter nailed a jumper from well behind the arc and Roanoke stole the inbound pass. With 12 seconds to play, a Maroon shot was off the mark and Lynchburg secured the rebound. The Hornets hit three of their final four free throws to ice the 63-58 win and advanced to the semifinal round tomorrow night.
  • Alquiza finished with 13 while Brandstatter added 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Harrel and Scarborough each added eight with Sanded finishing with six points and a team-high seven boards.
  • Roanoke finished the season with 20 wins for the first time since the 24-win team of the 2009-10 season.
