  • The Short Story: Guilford used a run in the second quarter to pull away and hold on for a 73-51 win over the Roanoke women's basketball team on Wednesday night. The Maroons were led by Lauren Keel's 13 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams played nearly even in the first quarter, as each squad went on small runs in the first 10 minutes. When the Quakers went up 10-2 with 7:27 left, the Maroons responded with a 6-0 run to pull within two at 5:54. Guilford responded with their own 7-0 run to go up 17-8 at 3:56. But Roanoke answered back with an 8-2 run to close out the period with the Quakers leading 19-16.
  • The second quarter saw Guilford use an early push to start the quarter to extend their lead before settling in on a defense that held the Maroons to eight points.
  • To start the third quarter, Roanoke scored the first four points to pull within nine at 37-28 with 8:29 on the clock. The Maroon defense did not allow the Quakers to score until 8:14 on a basket that nearly bounced out. Over the rest of the period, Guilford extended their lead by six from their halftime advantage to lead 58-37.
  • Much like the first 10 minutes, the fourth quarter was an even matchup with the Quakers scoring 15 and the Maroons 14. Roanoke pulled within 18 early in the quarter, but Guilford answered to maintain their lead and hold on for the 73-51 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • In addition to Keel's 13 points, Madison Nereu scored eight and both JaBryah Haverkamp and Nora Schroeder added seven.
  • The Maroons finished with more bench points (27-20) and more fast break points (7-4) than the Quakers.
