Valles, Schwartz Headline ODAC Women's Lacrosse Awards

Roanoke midfielder Gina Valles and head coach Mary Schwartz added to the Maroons 2009 success as the pair headlines the women's lacrosse all-conference teams as the ODAC Player and Coach of the Year. Roanoke earned a league-best six honors between the first and second teams including five selections to the first team. Paige Mason, Alida Haslett, Carolyn Clark, Katlyn Scarlett and Valles were tabbed first-team honors. Cristen Sanfilippo earned All-ODAC Second-Team.
Valles enters the NCAA tournament as the ODAC's leader in overall points (91), points per game (4.79), overall goals scored (70) and goals per game (3.68). Her 91 points are currently tied for ninth in the country, spearheading the nation's 14th ranked offense. Valles scored at least one goal in each of Roanoke's 19 games this season, notching two or more goals in 18 of those contests. She tallied at least four goals in 10 different games, going for a season-high seven goals in a regular season win over Washington and Lee. Valles earned the ODAC Player of the Week award three times throughout the season.
Schwartz led Roanoke to a perfect 8-0 mark during the ODAC regular season (15-4 overall) and the top seed in the conference tournament. Roanoke won both of its tournament games, securing the Maroons' first ODAC title and automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament since 1999. The championship was the 10th for the Maroons' program, tying Washington and Lee for the most in conference history. It also marked the first crown for Schwartz.
Mason was a first-teamer at attack for the first time in her career as she was named All-ODAC Second-Team last spring. She leads the team in assists with 29 and is currently ranked ninth in career assists at Roanoke (52) and 18th on the career scoring list (131 pts). She is second on the team in goals (33), points (62), shots (86), shots on goal (70) and draw controls with 39. She was named to the All-ODAC Tournament team for the second-straight year.
Haslett earned first-team honors for the second-straight season at defender. She leads the Maroons in caused turnovers (31), third in draw controls (22) and fourth in groundballs with 40. She scored her only goal of the season against Bridgewater on April 9. She was named to the 2009 ODAC All-Tournament team.
Clark, a junior defender, was named All-ODAC for the second-straight season. She has started in 17 of 18 games played this season while collecting 30 groundballs and caused 19 turnovers. Clark scored her first goal of the season in the season-finale against Hollins. Her best game of the season came in an overtime win over Virginia Wesleyan, collecting a season-best five groundballs and caused two turnovers. She was named to the 2009 ODAC All-Tournament team.
Scarlett, a senior goalie, earned her fourth All-ODAC honor in her career. She has totaled 153 saves this season to give her 672 for her career, which ranks third on the all-time list. Her 162 career groundballs are 11 shy of entering 10th all-time at Roanoke. Scarlett has had six 10-plus save games, including a season-best 16 against Elizabethtown. She was named to the 2009 ODAC All-Tournament team.
Sanfilippo, a junior midfielder, totaled 38 groundballs, 15 draw controls and 18 caused turnovers on the defensive end. Offensively, she scored three goals and added four assists for seven points on the season. Arguably her best game of the season came against Oneonta St. which she scored a goal, added a season-best two assists and four draw controls. She caused a career-high five turnovers in a 10-9 win over in-state rival Christopher Newport. She was named to the 2009 ODAC All-Tournament team.
The Maroons are currently 15-4 overall and finished ODAC play with an unbeaten 8-0 mark. The women claimed the ODAC regular season and tournament championship along with the undefeated mark for the first time since 1999. The 15 wins are tied with the 2007 team for the most in a single-season at Roanoke and are the most since 1990.
