Three Maroons Named to IWLCA/Under Armour Regional All-America Team
Roanoke College women's lacrosse had three players represented on the 2009 IWLCA/Under Armour Div. III Regional All-America Team announced this afternoon. Katlyn Scarlett and Gina Valles were named first-team while Paige Mason earned second-team honors.
Scarlett, a senior goalie, tallied 182 saves this season to give her 701 for her career which ranks second on the all-time list. Her 169 career groundballs four shy of entering 10th all-time at Roanoke. A team captain, Scarlett has had eight 10-plus save games, including 16 against Elizabethtown and a season-best 19 in her final collegiate game against #7 Gettysburg in the NCAA Regional Semifinals. The four-time All-ODAC performer was named to the 2009 ODAC All-Tournament team. She finished the year ranked 10th nationally in goals against average (8.42), 12th in save percentage (.528) and 20th in saves (184) which was a career-high. She was named a 2007 Second-Team All-American by the USILA as a sophomore.
Valles was ranked in the ODAC in overall points (1st), points per game (1st), goals per game (1st), game-winners (1st), groundballs per game (3rd) and shots per game (2nd). Her 98 points were 17th in the country and broke a new school-record. She also finished 16th nationally in goals (75) which was one shy of tying the single-season mark. Valles scored at least one goal in each of Roanoke's 21 games this season, notching two or more goals in 20 of those contests. She tallied at least four goals in 11 different games, going for a season-high seven goals in a regular season win over Washington & Lee. Valles earned the ODAC Player of the Week award three times throughout the season en route to the 2009 ODAC Player of the Year Award. She currently sits eighth on the school's all-time scoring list (177), sixth in career goals (139), fifth in career shots (296) and tied for third in career draw controls with 104.
Mason was named to the regional all-American team for the first time in her career. As a junior she was a first-team All-ODAC at attack for the first time in her career. The Orangeville, Ontario, Canada native was named All-ODAC Second-Team last spring. She finished the year ranked second in the ODAC in assists with 32 and is currently ranked ninth in career assists at Roanoke (55), 17th on the career scoring list (136 pts). She is second on the team in goals (35), points (67), shots (92), shots on goal (76) and draw controls with 42. She was named to the All-ODAC Tournament team for the second-straight year.
The Maroons finished 16-5, 8-0 in the ODAC while capturing their first regular season and tournament championship since 1999. The 16 wins tie the 1988 team for the second most in school-history. The 11-game win streak was the longest since the 1992 season. Head Coach Mary Schwartz was named the 2009 ODAC Coach of the Year.
These athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American teams, which will be announced on May 22. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American banquet on June 13, 2009 at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
