Roanoke Upends Randolph-Macon 11-4 in ODAC Action

ASHLAND, Va. - Gina Valles scored four goals and Katlyn Scarlett made 14 saves as Roanoke knocked off Randolph-Macon 11-4 in ODAC women's lacrosse action on Wednesday in Ashland.
For head coach Mary Schwartz, it was her first regular season win over the Yellow Jackets. For Roanoke, it was the first win in Ashland since 2002. The women are now 28-15-1 all-time in the series, 6-9 since 2000.
R-MC (2-3 / 1-1 ODAC) got on the board first when Morgan Hutchinson scored on a free-position-shot. The Jackets then doubled their lead when Erin Clare Cassidy tallied a strike with 24:10 left to go in the opening period.
Cristen Sanfilippo got Roanoke (6-4 / 3-0 ODAC) on the board with a goal with 13:26 left in the first stanza. Back-to-back goals by Valles gave the Maroons a 3-2 edge and a free-position goal by Paige Mason as time expired in the half made the score 4-2 at the intermission.
Roanoke's Carolyn Miller opened the second half scoring to put RC up 5-2, before Jenn Green struck with just under nine minutes to go to pull R-MC within two at 5-3, but that would be as close as the Jackets would get as RC scored six of the game's final seven goals to seal the victory.
Valles is now 21st on the all-time scoring list with 121 points and is two goals shy of 100 for her career. Miller netted three goals while Mason added two goals for the Maroons. Mason is now only one point shy of becoming the 27th member of the 100-point club at Roanoke.
Defensively, Alida Haslett had two groundballs and three caused turnovers while Elizabeth Hartge collected three groundballs for the Maroons. Carolyn Clark finished with two groundballs.
The women played their final road game of the regular season. The Maroons will begin a seven-game home stand this Saturday, March 28 against nationally-ranked Washington & Lee at Kerr Stadium. Roanoke is 12-21 all-time against the Generals and is winless over the last 11 seasons. Their last win came in the 1997 ODAC Championship game (8-7). Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
