Roanoke Cracks IWLCA Top-20 Poll

The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team was ranked 20th in the latest IWLCA Top-20 poll announced this evening. They cracked the top-20 for the first time this season and the first ranking since the beginning of the 2008 season.
This is the first earned top-20 ranking since 2007 for the Maroons, which ended in an NCAA Tournament appearance. Other opponents in the poll are Mary Washington (RV), Washington & Lee (15th), St. Mary's (18th) and Catholic (11th).
The Maroons (7-4, 4-0 ODAC) are undefeated and atop the latest conference standings after a memorable week. The women knocked off Randolph-Macon, 11-4 in Ashland for the first time there since 2002. It was also the first win for fifth-year head coach Mary Schwartz against the Yellow Jackets. They capped the week by defeating then-#12 Washington & Lee, 12-8 for the first time since 1999. It was also the most goals scored against the Generals since 1994.
Gina Valles leads the team in points (49), goals (41), shots (80), shots on goal (65) and groundballs (44). Alida Haslett has a team-best 16 caused turnovers along with 24 groundballs and 11 draw controls. Paige Mason has 33 points with 21 goals and a team-high 12 assists and 27 draw controls.
The women will host Greensboro in non-conference action on Wednesday, April 1 at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons hold a 4-1 series lead over the Pride, including winning the last three meetings by a combined score of 52-17. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
