Roanoke Downs Greensboro, 19-6 in Non-Conference Action

SALEM, Va. --- The Roanoke College women's lacrosse team kept rolling as they defeated Greensboro, 19-6 in non-conference action Wednesday evening. The Maroons improved to 8-4 on the season while the Pride dropped to 5-6 overall.
The win was the third-straight and the fifth in its last six games for Roanoke, which overcame a tough stretch of games in which all four of their losses came against nationally-ranked opponents.
Roanoke held a 38-15 shot advantage and dominated on groundballs, 59-28. They scored on 4-of-5 free-position shots and committed 22 turnovers. With the win, the Maroons are now 5-1 against the Pride, outscoring them, 81-23 in the last four meetings.
After Brooks Laufman's goal put the Maroons up, 1-0 within the first minute of play, Greensboro answered back with two goals to go up, 2-1 with just over 10 minutes into the contest.
Laufman and Valles scored the ensuing goals before the Pride scored again to tie the contest at 3-3 with 10:16 left as head coach Mary Schwartz called timeout.
Roanoke responded to her fiery speech and scored four of the last five goals to go up, 7-4 in what was an unexpected tight first half.
The Maroons proved that they were ready to play in the second half. With the score, 8-5 with 25-minutes remaining, the women fired off 10 unanswered goals over the next 22 minutes to put the game away.
Gina Valles led the Maroons with three goals, one assist, a career-high 13 groundballs, five draw controls and two caused turnovers. She is now ranked all-time at Roanoke in career points (17th), goals (11th), shots (11th), draw controls (10th) and caused turnovers (9th).
Paige Mason finished with two goals and two assists, which ranks her 26th on the career scoring list at Roanoke (106 pts). Brooks Laufman scored two goals to tie for 23rd all-time in scoring (123).
Meegan Rourke scored a career-best three goals along with eight groundballs, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Sunni Ray, Mary Kate Cummings and Elizabeth Hartge chipped in two goals apiece in the win while Ella Wade had a goal and an assist.
Defensively, Alida Haslett and Carolyn Clark combined for five groundballs and five caused turnovers. Katlyn Scarlett earned the win in goal for Roanoke with four saves while Caroline Wise stepped in the second half to contribute one save.
Layne Woodard led the Pride with three goals and one assist while Chelsea Farley chipped in a goal and an assist. Ashle Nolen and Melissa Gallaher had a goal with Christie Hebert providing an assist. Stacey Pulskamp notched 15 saves, 11 in the first half for Greensboro.
The women will host conference-rival Virginia Wesleyan at Kerr Stadium this Saturday following the men's lacrosse match vs. Hampden-Sydney in a Roanoke lacrosse doubleheader. The Marlins are second in the ODAC with a 3-1 conference mark as they come into Salem for an ODAC showdown. The Maroons hold a 10-4 series advantage, including the last three meetings. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
