Women's Lax Prevails in 10-7 win over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC Semifinals

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke scored three of the final four goals of the game to defeat Virginia Wesleyan, 10-7 at Kerr Stadium in the ODAC Semifinals Saturday afternoon. The win advances the Maroons to their third-straight ODAC Championship Game as their record improves to 14-4. The Marlins end their season at 9-9.
The Maroons held a 21-10 groundball advantage while they held a slim lead in shots, 26-22. Roanoke was successful in 14-of-18 clear attempts and forced 22 Marlin turnovers.
Brooks Laufman and Gina Valles teamed up to score the first three goals of the day to make it, 3-0 with just 10 minutes in the first half. Sunni Ray and Carolyn Miller scored two of the next four goals to go into the half with a 5-2 lead.
Virginia Wesleyan controlled the tempo throughout most of the second half. After Paige Mason found Valles for her third goal of the game to make it 6-2, the Marlins scored three-straight goals to close within one, 6-5.
The next four goals went back and forth as the Maroons held on to a one-goal lead, 8-7 with 14:03 remaining. Then with 7:41 remaining, Miller found the back of the net, followed by Mary Kate Cummings goal from Valles with four-minutes left to eventually seal the win and advance.
Valles led Roanoke with four goals and one assist in the win along with four draw controls and five groundballs. Miller added three goals and one assist while Mason led the Maroons with two assists.
Alida Haslett had three groundballs and three caused turnovers Melissa Madalon had three caused turnovers and collected two groundballs. Katlyn Scarlett had 11 saves in goals along with three caused turnovers and three groundballs.
The Marlins were led by Aimee Sraver and Laura Norris, scoring three goals apiece, including two off free position shots for both players. Ashley Sippel had 11 saves in goal for VWC.
The women will play against Washington & Lee in the ODAC Championship game held at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons defeated the Generals, 12-8 in the regular season, but the Generals are the six-time defending conference champions. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
