SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke provided some late heroics to get past Virginia Wesleyan in an 11-10 overtime win at Kerr Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons are now 9-4 and remain undefeated in ODAC play with a 5-0 mark. The Marlins dropped to 6-6, 3-2 in the ODAC.
Roanoke won the groundball battle, 63-30 and held a 32-19 shots advantage. The Marlins were five-of-seven in free-position shots, which was half of their scoring for the game.
Down 10-9 with six minutes to play, Paige Mason provided the game-tying goal to send the game into overtime as she went passed her defender and found the back of the net with just over a minute left in regulation.
In the overtime period, Carolyn Miller scored halfway through the period to provide the game-winner. Gina Valles footwork outran the defenders as time expired and the Maroons won their fifth ODAC game of the season.
Valles led Roanoke with three goals, 10 groundballs, five caused turnovers and three draw controls. Sunni Ray also had three goals with four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Mason finished with two goals, an assist and seven groundballs to pace the Maroons.
Defensively, Alida Haslett had five draw controls and five groundballs while Cristen Sanfilippo collected eight groundballs for the Maroons. Katlyn Scarlett had nine saves in goal for the Maroons.
Aimee Sraver finished with five goals to lead VWC while Bethany Adomanis added three goals. Ashley Sippel had 15 saves in goal for the Marlins.
The women will host Sweet Briar tomorrow afternoon in ODAC action at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons are 29-6 in the series against the Vixens and have won 24 of the last 25 meetings. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
