Roanoke Receives Votes in IWLCA Top-20 Poll
Roanoke women's lacrosse received votes in this week's IWLCA Top-20 poll announced this morning. It is the third-straight week the Maroons have been ranked in the weekly survey this season. It is the 11th-consecutive week dating back to last season that Roanoke has been in or have received votes in the IWLCA poll.
The Maroons, now 1-1 on the season, were defeated in their season-opener to now #17 Mary Washington. They rebounded with a 12-10 overtime victory over then #17 St. John Fisher, which still received votes in the poll. They fell out of the top-20 for the first time in seven weeks dating back to the middle of last spring.
Fellow ODAC-member Washington & Lee (2-2) remained in the #16 slot, along with future opponents Salisbury (2nd) and Cortland (15th), which remain in the weekly rankings.
Gina Valles leads Roanoke with 14 points (11g, 3a) along with 20 shots (14 SOG), seven groundballs and four draw controls. She tied a career-high with nine points and seven goals against St, John Fisher in the overtime win. Paige Mason follows with three goals and one assist, in addition to 12 shots, eight on goal and six groundballs. Cristen Sanfilippo leads the Maroons in groundballs (9) and caused turnovers with eight. Meegan Rourke has a team-best eight caused turnovers as well.
The women host Ursinus (1-1) this Friday at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons fell to the Bears in their only meeting, 7-6 at the 1991 NCAA Tournament. Game time is scheduled for March 12 at 4 p.m.
