Ursinus Upends Roanoke, 13-12
SALEM, Va. --- Ursinus scored seven of the final nine goals to defeat Roanoke, 13-12 at Kerr Stadium in non-conference action. The Maroons fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Bears climb to 2-1.
Ursinus held advantages in shots attempted (32-25), groundballs (20-18) and were 14-for-15 in clear attempts. Roanoke was 13-of-16 in clears.
Down 4-3 midway through the first half, Roanoke Paige Mason (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, Orangeville)scored back-to-back goals to give the Maroons a 5-4 lead. Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School)scored four minutes later to give them a two-goal lead before the Bears scored off a free position shot to cut it to one at the half.
Roanoke took control early in the second stanza, scoring four of the first five goals to give them a 10-6 lead. But the Bears took advantage of a man-up opportunity, reeling off three goals to cut the Maroons lead to one with 16:49 remaining.
Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )and Mason scored back-to-back goals to increase the Roanoke lead to three, 12-9, with 13:17 remaining. But Ursinus, which is 2-0 against the Maroons, scored three man-up goals late in the contest to tie the score at 12-all with five minutes left. The Bears scored the game-winner with 2:48 remaining.
Valles led Roanoke with five goals, which puts her fourth all-time with 155. She is now four points shy of 200 for her career and currently sits sixth on the career scoring list. She also moved into second all-time in career draw controls (110) and fourth all-time in career shots (321) and fifth in free-position goals (30).
Mason finished with three goals and an assist to tie for 13th on the all-time scoring list (144pts). She also moved into third in career draw controls (104). Sunni Ray (Severna Park, MD, Severn)added two assists and Mary Kate Cummings (Springfield, VA, South County)netted two goals for the Maroons.
Lindsay Urban led the Bears with three goals and one assist, followed by Elizabeth Canno and Emily Diehl with two goals and an assist each. Kim Peifer and Meghan Morley netted two goals apiece.
Casey Esloon (Kingwood, TX, Kingwood)finished with 12 saves in goal for Roanoke. Alex McBride had nine stops for Ursinus.
The women are on the road Sunday, as they play at Salisbury, which are ranked second in the nation. The Maroons are 3-2 against the Sea Gulls. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
