Roanoke Wins ODAC-Opener vs. Lynchburg
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke snapped a two-game skid with a 15-9 win over Lynchburg in the Maroons' ODAC-opener Wednesday evening. The Maroons improved to 2-3 overall, 1-0 in the ODAC. The Hornets dropped to 4-2, 0-1 in the conference.
Roanoke is now 28-21-1 against Lynchburg, winning the last five meetings and eight of the last 10. The 15 goals is the most scored in the series by either team since the 1996 season.
It was a tightly contested game on paper, Roanoke held slight edges in shots (24-23), shots on goal (21-15) and draw controls (17-9). The Maroons were 15-for-18 in clear attempts. Lynchburg held a 10-9 edge in groundballs.
Carolyn Miller (Clinton, MD, St. Mary's Ryken)and Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )led Roanoke with four goals apiece. Valles added an assist, collected two groundballs and won five draw controls. The junior midfielder became only the sixth player at Roanoke to eclipse over 200 career points. She moved into third all-time in career shots (332) and second in career draw controls with 117.
Paige Mason (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, Orangeville)followed with three goals and two assists with two groundballs. She is now 13th on the all-time scoring list with 150 career points. She moved into third in career draw controls with 107. Sunni Ray (Severna Park, MD, Severn)chipped in two goals with an assist. Cristen Sanfilippo (Sparks, MD, Hereford)had a goal and an assist with Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School)dishing out two assists, collecting three groundballs and winning three draw controls.
Lynchburg was led by Morgan Logue, who finished with three goals and one assist, with five draw controls. Lesley Buckingham added two goals and one assist while Kathryn Ollice had a goal and an assist.
Christina Tran had six saves in goal for Lynchburg. Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz)also had six saves in her first collegiate start for Roanoke.
The women return to action on Friday, March 19 as they host SUNY-Cortland at Kerr Stadium. The Red Dragons are ranked #16 in the IWLCA poll and will be the Maroons' fourth opponent this season ranked in the top-20. Roanoke's only meeting was back in 1991 as the Maroons topped Cortland, 8-7. Game time is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
