Roanoke Outlasts Virginia Wesleyan, 12-10
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- Roanoke held off five-straight Virginia Wesleyan goals midway through the second half to win, 12-10 Foster Field Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 6-5 overall, 4-1 in the ODAC. The Marlins dropped to 4-8, 3-2 in conference play.
The Maroons, over .500 for the first time this season, now have sole possession of second in the latest ODAC standings. Roanoke now owns a 13-4 series advantage against VWC, including the last six-straight.
Roanoke outshot Virginia Wesleyan, 25-19, with a season-best 17 draw controls. The Maroons are 7-of-7 in clear attempts. The Marlins won the groundball battle, 28-22.
Both teams traded the first six goals in the first 20 minutes of play before Roanoke reeled off five-straight goals to make it, 8-3 with 28:47 left in the second half.
The Marilins scored two goals to cut the Maroons lead to within three. But Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )scored, followed by Carolyn Miller (Clinton, MD, St. Mary's Ryken)with back-to-back goals to extend their lead to 11-5 with 22:38 remaining.
Virginia Wesleyan battled back, scoring four-straight goals over the next 17 minutes to make it, 11-9 at the 5:44 mark. Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School)goal ended a Marlin comeback, sealing the Roanoke victory.
Valles led Roanoke with eight points, including three goals and a career-best five assists. Millerpaced the Maroons with four goals, followed by Paige Mason (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, Orangeville)with a goal and two assists. She added a season-best draw controls and four groundballs. Cristen Sanfilippo (Sparks, MD, Hereford)dished out two assists with three assists and two draw controls.
Courtney Williams had a game-best five goals for VWC. Laura Norris scored three goals along with an assist, four groundballs and three draw controls. Brittany MacKnew and Tara Harding collected a team-high five groundballs for the Marlins. MacKnew had nine saves in goal, followed by Michelle Mace with one save.
Cristina Schicolone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)earned her third win of the season (3-1), as her and Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz)finished with one save.
Roanoke will travel to nearby Hollins in ODAC action on Monday, April 12. The Maroons have won 29-straight, including nine-consecutive games with 20 goals or more against Hollins since 2001. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
