Women's Lacrosse Downs Bridgewater in Road Finale
HARRISONBURG, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Bridgewater, 15-6 in its regular season road finale on Wednesday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 8-5 overall, 6-1 in the ODAC. The Eagles dropped to 9-6, 1-5 in conference play.
Bridgewater's Mary Robinson scored the first goal of the game, but Roanoke blew away the Eagles, outscoring them, 10-2 in the first half. Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )scored four of her six goals in the first 30 minutes with Paige Mason (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, Orangeville)adding two for the Maroons. Kate Moulton and Mary Robinson scored the Eagles' two goals for the half.
Roanoke outshot Bridgewater, 39-16, won the groundball battle, 30-12, and won nine draw controls. It was the Maroons' fifth-straight win while the loss snapped a four-game win-streak for the Eagles. It was the 29th win for Roanoke in the series.
Moulton and Caitlin Costello led the Eagles in goals with two each with Mary Robinson and Megan Bach adding one apiece. Erin Cartwright had three assists in the game.
Valles scored six goals along with four assists for 10 points for the Maroons. It was her third game in the last four with 10 points or more. She moved into fourth on the career assists list (72) and fourth on the all-time scoring list with 269 career points. She is only three goals shy of becoming only the third player in program-history to eclipse 200 in a career. He 92 points this season is now only seven shy of the single-season scoring record.
Mason had five points with two goals and tied a season-best with three assists. She added a team-high three draw controls, which is only six away from breaking the school-record in that category. Mason also moved into ninth on the all-time scoring list with 171 points. Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School)had two goals, tied a career-high with five turnovers and collected a career-best eight groundballs.
Carolyn Miller (Clinton, MD, St. Mary's Ryken)scored two goals for her seventh multi-goal game of the season. Alida Haslett (Bryn Mawr, PA, Radnor)finished with three groundballs and two caused turnovers to become the all-time leader at Roanoke with 87 for her career.
Bridgewater's Colleen Schwind recorded 16 saves in the game. Roanoke's Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz)had five saves to give her four wins in goal on the season.
The women will return home on Saturday in their regular season home finale as they host Guilford. It will be senior day for the Maroons as they will recognize them before the game begins. Game time is scheduled for noon at Kerr Stadium to kick off Alumni Weekend sporting events.
