Roanoke Falls to Christopher Newport in Regular Season Finale
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- Christopher Newport scored eight of the first nine goals of the second half en route to a 20-14 win over Roanoke in non-conference action Tuesday evening. The Captains improved to 11-4 while the Maroons finish the regular season with a 9-6 mark.
Roanoke was outshot, 32-27 and the Captains held an 11-8 edge in groundballs. The Maroons did win the draw control battle, 19-17 and were 10-of-13 on clear attempts.
The Captains scored four of the first five goals of the game before Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster )and Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School)scored the ensuing four of the next five Maroons scores to tie the contest at, 5-5 with 8:46 left in the first half. But CNU went into halftime with a slim 6-5 advantage.
After a Paige Mason (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, Orangeville)goal tied it at 6-all just 16-seconds into the second stanza, the CNU scored eight of the next nine goals to put them up, 14-7 with 18:25 remaining.
Roanoke, now 5-2 against Christopher Newport, netted four of the ensuing six goals over the next eight minutes of play to close to within five, but the Captains were able to outlast the Maroons, tallying four goals in a span of five minutes to keep the Maroons at bay.
Valles led the Maroons in scoring with four goals and two assists for six points along with seven draw controls. She moved into second on the career goals list (203) and became the school's all-time leader in draw controls with 139. The nation's #1 scoring leader in NCAA Div. III moved into fourth in single-season goals (65) and eighth on the single-season shots list (115) at Roanoke.
Rourke finished the day with three goals, four draw controls and two caused turnovers, which is one shy of tying the school-record in that category. Alida Haslett (Bryn Mawr, PA, Radnor)and Melissa Madalon (Darien, CT, Darien)totaled three caused turnovers each while Cristen Sanfilippo (Sparks, MD, Hereford)added two assists and three draw controls. Mason had two goals, one assist, three groundballs and three draw controls.
Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz)(5-2) took the loss in goal for Roanoke with four saves.
The women earned a #2 seed and a first-round bye in next week's ODAC Tournament. They will host the conference semifinals on April 28 at Kerr Stadium.
