Women's Lax Advances to Second-Straight ODAC Title Game

Lexington, Va. --- The women's lacrosse team weathered the storm, literally and four delays to defeat Virginia Wesleyan, 15-11 in the ODAC Semifinals at Washington & Lee University. The game itself took over six hours to complete.
The Maroons, who improved to 10-7 on the season, have now won six of the last seven games and are riding high heading into the rematch of the ODAC Championship game last season.
The Maroons were outshot, 35-34 but won 15-14 in groundballs in the marathon game. They were successful in 18-of-21 clear attempts and were 4-of-6 in free position attempts.
The Marlins went up 1-0 before Gina Valles and Amanda Hutchins scored four of the next six unanswered goals to take the lead for good, 6-1. VWC scored three of the next four goals to go into the half down, 7-4.
Valles scored the first two goals of the second half to go up, 9-4. But the Marlins scored the next three goals to bring them within two, 9-7 with 17 minutes remaining just before the long delay and having the game changed to the turf field with lights.
Roanoke took care of business after the delay, putting the game away scoring five of the next six goals to go up, 14-8 with five minutes remaining.
The Maroons are now 11-4 against Virginia Wesleyan, including the last three meetings.
Valles led the Maroons on Saturday with six goals and added an assist. She also won four draw controls and was 2-for-2 on free position shots. Brooks Laufman scored two goals and had an assist while Paige Mason had a goal and led the Maroons with two assists. Hutchins and Sunni Ray added two goals.
Katlyn Scarlett finished with 12 saves and six groundballs for Roanoke.
Aimee Sraver had four goals for the Marlins. Ashley Sippel finished with seven saves and six groundballs.
The Maroons will take on the Generals of Washington & Lee tomorrow for the ODAC Championship with game time scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The Maroons are 12-20 vs. the Generals all-time and dropped a 14-9 decision last month.
