Maroons win on Senior Day over Guilford in Season-Finale

The women's lacrosse team defeated Guilford, 15-8in its regular-season finale at Donald J. Kerr Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 9-7 on the season and finished with a 6-2 mark in the ODAC. The Quakers dropped to 8-6, 4-2 in the ODAC.
It was the final regular season home game for seniors Laura Bachmann, Cantey Bailey and Amanda Hutchins as they were honored just before the game.
The senior class has a four-year record of 39-30 and has improved that mark over each of the last three seasons. They were members of the 2007 ODAC Runner-Ups and NCAA Tournament participants. They have also improved their mark in the ODAC each year and have a four-year record of 19-11.
The Maroons won their second-straight and finished the season on a high note as they get a first-round bye before playing in the ODAC Semifinals next Saturday.
The Maroons outshot Guilford, 34-30 and won the groundball battle, 48-34. Roanoke was 21-of-23 in clear attempts.
Gina Valles was the engine for the Maroons' offensive attack in the first half, scoring five of the seven Roanoke goals to give her team a 7-5 halftime advantage. The Maroons scored three of the four first half goals to maintain the lead throughout the half.
The Maroons maintained control in the second half, outscoring the Quakers, 8-3. They killed any chance of a Guilford comeback scoring seven of the first eight goals in the half.
Valles finished with six goals and six groundballs on the afternoon to lead the Maroons. She leads the team in scoring (70 pts), goals (57) and assists with 14 on the year. With 70 points and 56 goals on the season, she broke the freshman scoring and goals record.
Hutchins finished with four goals and five groundballs on the day, three in the second half to lead the second half surge by the Maroons. She is three goals away from moving into seventh all-time in career goals at Roanoke. She is also three points away from moving up to 13th all-time in career points as well.
Paige Mason and Brooks Laufman each had two goals and one assist on the afternoon. Cristen Sanfilippo finished with a goal and five groundballs while Sunni Ray added an assist and three groundballs.
Katlyn Scarlett finished with a season-high 20 saves. Guilford's Alyzza May-Callahan had 10.
The women will await word next week for the ODAC Tournament pairings. The Maroons advanced to the ODAC Championship game last season, falling to W&L. Game time next week is TBA.
