Roanoke Tops Greensboro, 18-6 in Season-Opener
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke scored 14 unanswered goals to win its 2011 season-opener, 18-6 over Greensboro at Kerr Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Maroons are now 1-0 while the Pride dropped to 0-1.
With the win, Roanoke won its fifth-straight meeting over Greensboro. The Maroons now hold a 6-1 series lead vs. The Pride and have won their third season-opener in the last four years.
The Maroons came out the gate slow, as Greensboro mounted an upstart 6-5 halftime lead. Then newcomer Lyndsey Jones (Easton, MD, St. Peter and Paul), settled down to shutout The Pride in the second half to earn her first collegiate victory in goal. She finished with seven saves on the day.
Roanoke outshot Greensboro, 28-15, 23-13 in shots on goal. The Pride held slight advantages in draw controls, (14-11) groundballs (11-9) and were 6-for-6 in clear attempts. The Maroons were 11-for-12 in clears on the day.
Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School) and Jamie Golden (Timonium, MD, Notre Dame) got off to a great start to the season with five goals apiece to pace Roanoke. Kathleen Wager (Lexington, VA, Rockbridge County) totaled three goals and an assist, while Carolyn Miller (Clinton, MD, St. Mary's Ryken) added two goals and two assists.
Pre-season All-American candidate Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster ) had three goals and four assists to lead the Maroons. She is now only 10 points shy of breaking the all-time scoring record at Roanoke. Valles, who is fifth on the ODAC's all-time scoring list with 289 career points, needs 14 more to move into second in that category.

The women return to action on March 2 as they host Hollins in the ODAC-opener for both teams. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
