Roanoke Holds on to Knock off Ursinus, 14-11
MYRTLE BEACH, SC—Roanoke held a 10-7 halftime lead and held on to defeat Ursinus, 14-11 in the first of two games this week at Myrtle Beach. The Maroons are off to a 3-0 start while the Bears are 1-1.
RC out-shot UC, 28-17 and held a 32-26 edge in groundballs. The Maroons were 20-for-22 in clear attempts while 3-of-7 in free position shot attempts. The Bears were 4-of-7 in FPA's and 16-of-22 in clears for the morning.
For the first 20-minutes it was Ursinus who had the early momentum as they held a 4-3 lead with 11-minutes remaining in the first half. Three of the first four goals for the Bears came off Alyssa Thren's free-position shots.
Kathleen Wager's (Lexington, VA, Rockbridge County) back-to-back goals gave the Maroons the lead for good and Allison Bonanno (Ridgewood, NJ, Ridgewood) scored off a free-position shot to extend the lead. Emily Diehl put the Bears within one, 6-5 with 7:05 remaining just before the half.
After the Maroons reeled off three unanswered goals over the ensuing four minutes to take a 9-5 lead, UC answered back with consecutive goals of their own and would go into halftime trailing 10-7.
The Maroons would hang on and win their third-straight, including some revenge on the Bears from last year's heartbreaking one-goal loss.
Kathleen Wager led Roanoke with four goals on the day followed by freshman Allison Bononno who totaled three goals and an assist. Meegan Rourke (Greenwich, CT, Millbrook School) had two goals and two assists with 11 shots, nine on goal. She caused a team-best four turnovers.
Gina Valles (South Windsor, CT, Westminster ), who finished with five points (3g, 2a), moved into second on the ODAC's all-time scoring list with 304 career points. She collected a career-high 10 groundballs, won three draw controls and caused three turnovers. Melissa Madalon (Darien, CT, Darien) and Carolyn Miller (Clinton, MD, St. Mary's Ryken)totaled four groundballs and three caused turnovers apiece.
Alyssa Thren scored a game-best five goals for Ursinus and scored on all four free-position shots. She also collected five groundballs and caused four turnovers. Allison Furman added three goals in addition to five groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Laura Zdziarski (Gainesville, FL, Buchholz) (2-0) earned the win for the Maroons, stopping four shots in over 38-minutes of action between the pipes. Emma Bacharach (9) and Jackie Kimmel (2) combined for 11 saves for the Bears.
The Maroons returns to action this Wednesday, March 9, taking on Elizabethtwon in their final game at Myrtle Beach. Game time is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
